WASHINGTON Sen. Deb Fischer, R-Neb., indicated Tuesday that she supports President Donald Trump quickly filling the Supreme Court seat left vacant by the death of Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
Fischer supported blocking then-President Barack Obamas nominee Merrick Garland in 2016 because it was a presidential election year.
But today theres a Republican instead of a Democrat in the White House, and Fischer suggested that makes all the difference.
Since 1796 during election years of unified government between the Senate and the president, there have been 17 successful Supreme Court confirmations, Fischer said in a statement. Accordingly, voting on President Trumps nominee is what the people who elected him in 2016, along with an enhanced Senate majority in both 2016 and 2018, expect us to do. It is also what Democrat leaders have said they would do if they were in our position.
It has not been the practice of the Senate to fill a Supreme Court vacancy that arises during an election year, Fischer wrote in 2016, when Senate Republicans blocked President Barack Obama's Supreme Court appointment of Merrick Garland. She indicated Tuesday she supports quickly replacing the late Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

(21,714 posts)If the seat has opened up at the beginning of the year, it would be an entirely different story. I would be cursing under my breath, but he would be doing what his job is, no matter how disgusting I would find his choice

(1,910 posts)Enough is enough, the minority have ruled over the majority for decades. It has to end. Win the Senate and Presidency, eliminate the filibuster, expand the court to 15, give DC and PR statehood. Make red states pay their fair share into the US Treasury. Its just ridiculous that the blue states support the entire country and we let them walk all over us.

(7,365 posts)A lifetime appt to the highest court in the land where their decisions will impact BILLIONS (yes Billions, what we do is not isolated to just the USA) of people, their rights, life and liberty and this person stays on that court until they quit or die.
Of all the decisions that DESERVE deliberation this would be one, but these are Republicans we are talking about, total shitbags.
