'That's what college kids do.' DeSantis wants protections for partying students
Source: Politico
Gov. Ron DeSantis suggested on Thursday that Florida could create a bill of rights to protect college students who face expulsion for attending parties under the strict Covid-19 guidelines schools are attempting to enforce.
Calling the policies incredibly draconian at a public health event, the Republican governor said the state is exploring its options for students without going into much detail. The idea comes as school leaders in Florida and beyond threaten stiff penalties for breaking social distancing rules in an effort to keep coronavirus transmission low and campuses open throughout the full semester.
I personally think its incredibly draconian that a student would get potentially expelled for going to a party, DeSantis said Thursday. Thats what college kids do.
Its still happening: School leaders last month, at the dawn of the fall semester, came down hard on students and Greek organizations that gathered in large groups, defying school health guidelines. Fraternities were suspended, students were sent home from their dorms all in an attempt to curb Covid-19 outbreaks that could cause colleges to close wholesale.

(31,514 posts)Treat them like adults. If they know the rules, they should suffer the consequences when they break them. It's not just their health that they jeopardize by their actions.
Purely anecdotal, but when my children were teens I found that if I treated them like adults they started to act more like adults. As long as I treated them like children, that's how they acted.

(3,386 posts)When you have a bunch of kids and testosterone is at its high, or wanting to fall in love, their heads are not going to act in an adult manner, and many campuses in the country have proven that.
You can treat them like adults, but when in a group, they will forget they are adults. There are many books on the subject on how people in crowds can easily change behaviour, some who have always been peaceful loving people in their communities can easily turn to violence when in a crowd, and the same happens with kids no matter how much we teach them, peer pressure can make them behave in a way that even they know is not right, and when the party comes about, well...it is anybody's guess how they will decide.
My humble opinion.

(5,223 posts)but at 18, I got married, had a full time job, had a baby at 19, bought our first house at 25 and did all the wifley duties of the time. So he's saying people that age are not responsible? Let's give them the opportunity to be for a change. Stop belittling them and let them show us what they can do.

(12,582 posts)Mandatory attendance for every student who thinks the primary purpose of college is to party. DeSantis can show up every evening to lead cheers. No masks permitted.
The other 90% of the student body can attend school in a virus-free environment and actually get an education.

(3,386 posts)I have lost all confidence on the voters, and if you saw any of the ads DeSantis had during his campaign, reading trump stories to his baby and still get elected, if in fact he got elected and no hacking happened, then you would know that voters don't think and are not informed because if they were, no republican would be elected.
The only thing in his ads that was missing was DeSantis nose inside trump's butt.

(19,193 posts)Ron DeSantis, or Ron DeSatan as I like to call him. He's determined to kill everyone in Florida and bankrupt every business, just because he's SO eager to be the next unelected Russian doorknob in the White House. I'm never setting foot in Florida again. When Floridians smarten up and elect Democrats to run their state I might consider visiting again. I might!

(34,136 posts)Only protecting them from the consequences of their actions? Which is worse, getting the virus and chancing death or life long serious health issues versus being expelled from school for not following the guidelines?
What's next, "protecting" the students from being expelled for cheating on exams or plagiarism? Adults have to learn to operate within the system, following the rules established by society. By the time they are in college, they should be capable of doing so - unless they grow up to be Republican sociopaths to whom rules do not apply.
