Dying winds give crews hope in Northern California fires

Source: AP

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Firefighters say they hoped dying winds would enable them to bear down on a wildfire that exploded in the Northern California wine country, prompting tens of thousands of evacuations while a second blaze killed at least three people.

The Glass Fire raged through Napa and Sonoma counties on Monday, tripling in size to around 56.6 square miles (146.59 square kilometers) without any containment.

Some two dozen homes had burned, the San Jose Mercury News reported.

The fire north of San Francisco was driving through brush that hadn’t burned for a century, even though surrounding areas were incinerated in a series of blazes in recent years.

I’m happy to report that this morning is cool and a little damp. The air quality is much better, yesterday was one of the worst we’ve experienced here.

It’s definitely not over yet, fire is poking into the Calistoga area, which is where the Tubbs fire came from in ‘17 and burned about 6k homes. My in-laws are evacuated from their rebuilt home from that fire. My own neighborhood is still under threat. We narrowly escaped in 2017. The high school you may have heard about is a quarter mile from my house.

I don’t mean to sound grim, today is improved. We would still appreciate your tots and pears.

Personally I’m hoping I can go home later for at least a little while to run the generator. As far as I know the power is still out since almost 36 hours ago. I’d sure be bummed to lose my freezers.

Ug, I don’t mean to sound flip, sometimes gallows humor is all you have...

I lived in Willits/Ukiah for about 20 years and my heart is breaking for all of you! This is such a tragedy and I'm sorry you are experiencing this. I'm holding you in my heart to keep you safe. My sweet niece is on the Greenfield Ranch outside Ukiah, and one of the fires was close to my old home on 1st Gate and I saw there was fire up on 3rd Gate outside Willits.

I loved Calistoga and I've been checking on St. Jean Chateau vineyard outside St. Helena but couldn't find anything about that. And on the tragedy of the loss of homes and lives of all sentient beings is devastating.

Stay safe and you have all my tots and pears!
