Biden uses 'inshallah' in response to Trump during debate, lighting up Twitter

(CNN) -- During one of the more charged moments of the chaotic US presidential debate, former Vice President Joe Biden dropped a phrase from everyday Muslim and Arab vocabulary and lit up the internet.

Pressing President Donald Trump on when the American public would get to see his long-anticipated tax returns, Biden questioned: "When? Inshallah?"

In certain vernacular, "inshallah" serves as a non-committal response to a question.

Taken literally, the term "inshallah," consists of three Arabic words (In sha' Allah) which translate into "if God wills it." Spiritually it represents a submission to God's will. It can perhaps be seen as the Muslim counterpart to the Yiddish adage, "Man plans, and God laughs."

studies. It's the source of the Spanish word "ojala" meaning "I hope" or "I wish." It came into Spsnish from the centuries of Islamic rule.

Not being Muslim, I don't know how Muslims view Biden's use of the word. But it does indicate that he knows something about cultures beyond his own personal experience.

29. When I lived in Libya 2 yrs and Saudi Arabia for part of a year

it was used to mean "God Willing!" It had nuances though. A frequent use of it was when beggars shouted "Bucksheesh" and you replied with "Inshallah" they would stop begging and go away. The meaning was that God would take care of you. It was predestined and therefore you did not have to give to them.

I think in this context it simply meant that if God wills the tax returns to be released, they will be, but with a bit of a negative insinuation.
