Invincibility punctured by infection: How the coronavirus spread in Trump's White House

By Friday afternoon, Trumps condition had worsened, officials said, though they maintained he was in good spirits. The president had a low-grade fever, a cough and nasal congestion, among other symptoms, according to two people familiar with his condition who, like others interviewed for this story, spoke on the condition of anonymity to candidly discuss a sensitive matter.
Trump was transported about 6:16 p.m. Friday to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center for further treatment out of what the White House described as an abundance of caution.
As Trumps condition deteriorated during the day Friday, the president and his team ultimately made the decision to send him to Walter Reed preemptively and, from a public relations perspective, when he was still able to walk to Marine One on his own, according to one outside adviser in frequent contact with White House officials. They feared the possibility of a further decline, and what that might mean, both for the presidents health and his political optics.

(6,131 posts)If they had to stuff him like a Christmas goose. Hes all about branding image. Even if the gold is only gold paint, it better shine like glitter. So he had to present a strong image strolling out the door, no apparent distress. The only fly in that ointment is hed have never consented to go to the hospital if everything was hunky dory. They must have scared the pants off of him or he could feel himself declining and decided to go while he could still stand up.
By the way, the people testing positive that are in his orbit are announcing their positive tests about every two hours. This is turning into their worst nightmare really fast. If no one dies or suffers serious, debilitating after effects of the virus, it will be a miracle.

(8,312 posts)... as soon as I saw that he was going to be flown to Walter Reed. Not really because of optics, but because this is the President of the United States and the risk is serious. We have a shitton of tax dollars sitting for a sick President, and well, these special benefits come with the job of leading the "free world".
I didn't know he got experimental antibodies, but I do know that when ZMapp was made for Ebola, originally there were 6 doses made known to the public and one held back, and a lot of people presumed it was one that was in reserve should a world leader get Ebola. So it doesn't surprise me he got an antibody treatment, too.
If we go by the timeline from the first case of COVID-19 in the United States that was recognized as such from the start and monitored in a hospital for isolation purposes more than anything else... he had self-described cough from day 1 back in the United States, but not a clinical fever until Day 5 of illness, and only developed pneumonia on Day 9. Given Remdesivir illness Day 11, almost immediate response.
This patient was a young, healthy person with no comorbidities such as obesity.
And while the antibodies were a shot, Remdesivir is only able to be administered through IV infusions. It would be far better for them to be able to xray/CT his lungs as well the moment a drop in oxygenation started to happen.
So while yeah, I could see them also being concerned with keeping him out of the public eye... well, if it were President Hillary Clinton (who is a little younger and less overweight but still not a spring chicken), a 10% risk of death for the demographic of 65+ not living in a nursing home (in my state) would have them probably doing the same thing right about now.
