As cold weather arrives, U.S. states see record increases in COVID-19 cases

Source: Reuters

(Reuters) - Nine U.S. states have reported record increases in COVID-19 cases over the last seven days, mostly in the upper Midwest and West where chilly weather is forcing more activities indoors.

On Saturday alone, four states - Kentucky, Minnesota, Montana and Wisconsin - saw record increases in new cases and nationally nearly 49,000 new infections were reported, the highest for a Saturday in seven weeks, according to a Reuters analysis. Kansas, Nebraska, New Hampshire, South Dakota and Wyoming also set new records for cases last week.

Daytime highs in many of these states are now in the 50s Fahrenheit (10 Celsius). Health experts have long warned that colder temperatures driving people inside could promote the spread of the virus.

Montana has reported record numbers of new cases for three out of the last four days and also has a record number of COVID-19 patients in its hospitals.

What is crazy is that even as cases continue to increase and with Trump coming down sick, Republicans continue to file lawsuits to block and impair efforts to combat the spread.

I guess it must be great if you have millions of dollars in taxpayers funded, state of the art health care to back you up if get sick due to your own negligence.

2. I found out today that my nephew in Wyoming tested positive for COVID-19.

He is 36 years old and in good health with no risk factors, but my sister is worried. He will be in quarantine for at least another week. He did wear a mask and followed social distancing rules, but he probably picked it up at the church he attends.

In the wake of Trump's diagnosis, the survey also found an increasing number of Americans concerned that they, or someone they know, will be infected with the virus. 81 percent are either very or somewhat concerned about contracting COVID-19, compared to 72% two weeks ago. The percentage of "very concerned" respondents rose 8 percentage points, from 29% to 37%.

The overall jump can be almost entirely attributed to Republicans, whose net concern increased 18 points (52% to 70%), and independents, whose concern increased 13 points (69% to 82%). Democrats held steady at 86%.

50 states' minicharts "map" page, alternative to the NY Times from John Hopkins University
The below "map" of the 50 states' minicharts (which are scaled by daily new cases PER CAPITA), is from the John Hopkins U. https://coronavirus.jhu.edu/data/new-cases-50-states -- at that page you can click on individual states on the "map". Showing 3-day moving average of new cases. I prefer the nytimes' charts which are 7 day moving averages)

Notice how many states are the worst they've ever been -- some way way worse. And some that brought their numbers way down are headed up again in a big way

4. What is really crazy is how the rate of testing has gone way down in some heavily hit states

For example, Florida. You would almost think that DeSantis is buying into the idea that if you test less, there is no COVID-19. Of course, Florida's positivity rate for the few tests they take has been steadily increasing.

7. Southern California is supposed to have a warm fall and winter--and it's downright hot right now.

I usually like fall and winter on the Southern California chilly side (which isn't cold), but I'll take the warm one this year. Maybe it will help keep the COVID and flu cases down (because people won't gather in crowds indoors).

9. Yeah, 90 degree highs, which is extreme, and has caused fire dangers in the West...

...so there is always a downside. Why can't California just have highs in the 70s? It is fall for chrissakes.
