University of Iowa pauses diversity training after Trump executive order

Source: Cedar Rapids Gazette

IOWA CITY — The University of Iowa is pausing for two weeks all of its diversity and inclusion training and programming to evaluate whether any of it violates a new executive order from President Donald Trump barring what he called race or sex “stereotyping” or “scapegoating” training for federal workers, contractors or grant recipients.

In a message disseminated over the weekend to the UI president’s cabinet and council of deans, Liz Tovar — interim associate vice president for UI Diversity, Equity and Inclusion — said the temporary stoppage doesn’t alter the campus’ commitment to diversity.

“However, after consulting with multiple entities, and given the seriousness of the penalties for non-compliance with the order, which include the loss of federal funding, we are recommending that all units temporarily pause for a two-week period to evaluate any trainings, workshops, or programs that may include language or materials that could be deemed in violation of the executive order,” Tovar wrote.

The order, which Trump signed Sept. 22, aims to upend “destructive ideology” it argues is “grounded in misrepresentations of our country’s history and its role in the world. This ideology is rooted in the pernicious and false belief that America is an irredeemably racist and sexist country; that some people, simply on account of their race or sex, are oppressors; and that racial and sexual identities are more important than our common status as human beings and Americans,” the order states.

Oy. The University of Michigan has condemned the order and is flouting it, continuing with its diversity and equity training.

University of Iowa students love to protest the assholery of the administration on a regular basis. I see some social distancing demonstrations coming to the Pentacrest.

My office is on campus, though I'm able to work from home this semester. Our students will not sit idly by.

Also, here's the story from the Daily Iowan, the student newspaper.

Full disclosure: I'm on the DI board.

... that an executive order isn't law and isn't binding to any agency not directly under the control of the White House.

This is U of Iowa bootlicking Trump.

A simple course won't deprogram a hater who has had at least 18 years of practice.

I recommend the same treatment Alex got in A Clockwork Orange. Add electroshock where needed.

under a multicultural requirement approved by a faculty governance body. It's essentially the same as requiring that all students take at least one course in the physical sciences. There were probably a wide variety of course offerings that qualified (Multicultural American Literature, African American History after 1945, Indigenous Rhetorics, Sophomore Seminar on Latin America, 1500-1800, etc., etc., etc.).

That's completely different from diversity, equity, and inclusion trainings for faculty and staff.

If you took a training rather than a course (you said course), then obviously I'm mistaken here.

13. Difference in Michigan and Iowa -- governors

Iowa is saddled Governor Kimmy -- a moronic tRump lackey who has rushed to open businesses and schoools. They have admitted tha they set the positivity at three times the recommended rate for opening schools because "We didn't think anyone would recah that mark and schools would have to open." Then when many areas exceeded the 15% threshold, they denied the schools going fully virtual anyway, ignoring their own crazy guidelines.

Michigan has a governor who has stood up to the Orange menace -- done what is scientifically valid and tried to protect her state's residents.

I wish I had a Governor like Whitmer -- unfortunately I have Governor Kimmy and useless senators ernst and grassley. I figure that I am stuck in my basement for a long time as the grown ups like Biden and Harris will have to undo the crazy crap that idiots like Gov Kimmy and other trump humpers have done to so many states.

should be given the same treatment as one of Hitler's delusional, sweeping orders from late April, 1945.

When he's safely out of the way, sane people can begin to rebuild.

as a car salesman and the very first thing I had to do was watch a video about sexual harassment. It was done to help the dealership avoid lawsuits. It had nothing to do with politics.
