Gov. Mike DeWine agrees with Donald Trump on COVID-19: 'We have to learn to live with it'

Source: Columbus Dispatch

While offering prayers Tuesday for Donald Trump — as well as those ill and dead — Gov. Mike DeWine called on Ohioans to learn from the president's COVID19 infection.

"All of us are at risk of getting it," DeWine said at his regular online coronavirus news conference.

"Even the leader of our great country can get the virus. It can happen to anyone. No one is immune," DeWine said.

"The president said yesterday we should not let the virus dominate our lives and that is certainly true, We have to learn to live with it, at least for awhile," the governor said.

6. Top epidemiologists warn America could be headed for an 'apocalyptic' COVID-19 fall
Tue Oct 6, 2020, 04:21 PM
Oct 2020

The reason why Republicans are jumping on the "it is, what it is" bandwagon is because even folks like DeWine can see that COVID cases and deaths will rise in fall, so DeWine is trying to set the bar that this is entirely normal and expected.

The truth, of course, is that this is largely due to Trump's mismanagement and Republican enablement. Think about it. There were more COVID cases this past week in the White House then the entire nation of New Zealand or Taiwan.

https://thehill.com/changing-america/well-being/longevity/517400-top-epidemiologists-warn-america-is-headed-for-an

As the United States approaches 200,000 coronavirus deaths and the seven-day average for new cases has been steadily rising, some top health experts are warning that the country could be headed into dangerous territory in the fall.

“We may be in for a very apocalyptic fall, I’m sorry to say,” Peter Hotez, the co-director of the Texas Children’s Hospital Center for Vaccine Development, told CNN’s “New Day” on Monday.

“It's happening because we're forcing schools to reopen in areas of high transmission. We're forcing colleges to reopen, and we don't have the leadership nationally, telling people to wear masks and to social distance and do all the things we need to do. We still have that disinformation campaign coming out of the White House and it’s literally killing Americans,” Hotez said.

Hotez noted that the U.S. recorded more than 66,000 new cases a day over the summer at the end of July and the beginning of August. He said cases began to fall as people “finally” started getting the message about masks and other health measures, but daily new infections are now creeping up to the 40,000 mark as fall approaches.

thought that DeWine was actually exhibiting some leadership by being prudent and conscientious back in March and April, but he lost all credibility after failing to forcibly defend Dr. Acton and displayed absolute cowardice in his capitulation to the armed mob/militia cretins that descended on the capital. He's now returned to his sniveling, swarmy self.

The headline and portion excerpted is extremely misleading.

There's still a mask mandate in Ohio. Bars still close at 10:00 PM. There are still bans on large gatherings. Etc.

That's all part of learning to live with a virus that is going to be around a long time.

So sick of people reading the headlines and not the article or listening to the press conference.

Do you think it is going to vanish miraculously? Well, we'd better learn to live with it then.

There is still a mask mandate in Ohio, bars close at 10 PM, large gatherings are still banned. He's still leading by example by wearing a mask every time he steps behind the podium, avoiding large gatherings (he was not at the Debates, for example).

He's not perfect - and I think he blew it by failing to implement the mask mandate earlier. But by and large, he has handled this well. And he is smart enough to know that Ohioans will be better off if he doesn't get into a smack-down fight with Trump - since Trump controls some of the funding to the state.

but I do "read beyond the headlines" and listen to his press conferences. He's totally succumbed to pressure from right wing politicians, businesses, and extremists groups. His abject failure to forcibly defend Dr. Acton and pursue prosecution of those harassing her is unforgivable. Also, letting militia groups and their supporters engage in a hostile occupation of our capital grounds was unconscionable. A strong, independent leader would not feel the need exhibit his fealty to King Donnie with constant ass kissing.

Only a fragment of the conversation is reported in this article - taken way out of context.

A strong leader also recognizes when it is smart not to pick fights with useful idiots. Ohio is far better off because DeWine is not taking advantage of the opportunities he is offered at every press conference to smack Trump silly. We all know how vengeful Trump is - and he would take it out on all hte rest of us. It is in our best interests that he not volunteer to join the s**t list.

As for harassment of Acton - neither DeWine nor Acton has disclosed enough about the nature of the harassment for me to evaluate whether prosecution was merited - or even whether the harassers were identified. She was provided with police protection at her residence. He also spent several press conferences forcibly defending her. I'll follow her lead as to whether his actions outside of the public eye were assertive enough.

I don't agree with everything DeWine has done. I would not exclude churches or protests from the mask order. I would have implemented the mask order far sooner. I would not have included unrestricted catering in the same treatment as restaurants (since that's the means by which most larger gatherings are now being held and transmitting COVID 19).

But given that, he is a strong leader on this issue who respects science. His record on this matter is as good as most of the Democratic governors - as reflected in disease stats in line with the average state governed by Democrats.

What good does prayers for the dead do? It will not bring them back to life.

And what should Ohioans learn from Trump's infection? That with $3 million you too can defeat it? Frankly, Trump is still not out of the woods.

Learning to live with it doesn't mean being stupid. It means wearing masks (which he does every single time he approaches the podium, even when it is in his own living room), social distancing, closing the state bars at 10PM, banning large gatherings, etc.

Everyone wears a mask in public. Social distancing even with masks. No large gatherings. You know the rest.

If everyone did this it would be the same as shutting down everything. That was the goal in the spring. Shut things down to keep it under control. Get everyone used to the new reality for a year or so then open up in a new way.

But of course, we all know why that went sideways. The cult followed the leader. If there is a silver lining to this shit cloud it is this. Had trump taken it seriously and leaned into science and doing what had to be done, he would be cruising to re-election. But then he would not be trump.

if they don't we really will be in the world of "living with it". This is what was done for many diseases in the past centuries when there was no vaccine or cure, e.g. small pox, polio, etc.

Fortunately, it seems consistent among America and European countries experiencing a second surge that the death rate is much lower. Hopefully that trend continues over time.

That is twisting what he said.

Listen to the Tuesday press conference - or read the rest of the article (which captures some sense of it).

He agress with Trump that we will have to learn to live with it - in the sense that it is going to be around a while. I find it hard to believe anyone would disagree with that.

But that is where the similarity ends. His plan for living with it includes mask, social distancing, closing bars at 10 PM, limiting large gatherins, leading by example by wearing a mask - even when the press conferences take place from his living room.

This virus will be around for some time to come and we will have to "learn how to live with it" until a vaccination can be created.

I also agree that Masks, social-distancing and contact tracing are important, but has he hired anyone to do contact tracing as of yet? Perhaps some but Ohio has done poorly in this aspect.

From what I'm seeing, Ohio is disturbingly trending upward and Influenza season is arriving, not a comforting thought when Ohio has surpassed 163K infected thus far, many with long-term issues.

I've spoken to Epidemiologists and various Specialists and am told that until Ohio closes bars and restaurants, this virus will continue to burn through the State and Country. I'm in full agreement.

I'm quite irate with DeWine, other Governors are securing vital PPE for Healthcare workers, yet he has not. I've heard from many hospital employees that are re-using regular surgical masks with no face shields/goggles while dealing with the sick. This should not be, DeWine should be on the phone securing protective equipment.

As of September 28th, more than 1,700 U.S. healthcare workers have died from COVID-19, which is not acceptable to me. I'm sure those stats have risen since.

Schools should not be in session in Ohio or anywhere for that matter during a Pandemic. Children are getting sick and dying, also passing the virus onto their siblings, family members and teachers. Children are not immune.

I've had teachers contact me from various districts, stating that they're scared to death. They've been given no protocol for dealing with something of this magnitude. Children are swapping masks, teachers are expected to disinfect classrooms thoroughly in between classes, which gives them 3 minutes to do. Buses that transport the children are not being disinfected.

I had one teacher convey to me that she's had children who have tested positive, were sent home to quarantine, yet no letters were sent home to the other student's parents to alert them their kids had been exposed to positive cases.

DeWine has caved to the few that wanted Sports games to begin. The last time I drove past several High School stadiums, they were packed in the stadiums like sardines with no distancing or masks.

DeWine and Lt. Governor Jon Husted issued the proclamation for Sunday, Oct. 4 for a "Day of Prayer for President Trump and first lady." He caught hell for this and eventually added in "as well as all those suffering from or impacted by coronavirus."

Prayer isn't going to help Ohio at this point. Ohio needs leadership that entails a plan of action on issuing a true mask mandate with penalty, adequate testing facilities, contact tracing, the closing of establishments that are furthering the spread and above all, adequate PPE for Healthcare Workers that have to risk their lives on a daily basis.

Forgive me if I'm not a fan of DeWine or the reckless manner in which he is handling this Pandemic from his cozy home with Frannie and the kids all safely tucked away.
