Republicans: Ditch Trump, Save the Senate

Increasingly convinced that President Donald Trumps election chances are grim, top Republican donors, lobbyists, and operatives are directing their attention to the Senate in hopes of keeping a majority in the chamber and, with it, a check on a future President Joe Biden.
Top GOP money men said that efforts to shift resources to Republicans running for the Senate have been happening for weeks, as Trumps chances have not improvedindeed, worsenedand as the partys candidates have been dramatically outraised.
There is no discussion among donors about giving money to the president, said one prominent GOP donor. The discussion among donors, bundlers and check writers is about the Senate seats.
But among seasoned GOP operatives, the imperative to prioritize down-ballot races has only increased in recent days amid Trumps shaky debate performance and his infection with COVID-19. The argument is one of political triage: the party must use the specter of uniform Democratic control of Washington to save more viable Republicans, not just in the Senatewhere the party very well could retain controlbut also the House, where continued minority status seems almost assured.

"Don't give (winning Democrat) a blank check" is a standard Republican argument, but it seems late in the game to roll it out.

(19,201 posts)and they all walked in lockstep with the shit-bag in the Oval Office. They can't run away from Trump because THEY ARE Trump. They allowed it to be Trump's party, now they can go down with Trump's party. No reward for bad behavior, you jackasses. You reap what you sow.

(47,430 posts)to disown Trump now and Democrats need to keep reminding voters how republicans blindly supported Trump for four years.

(22,912 posts)Not only are Democrats in a good position to win Maine, North Carolina, Arizona, and Colorado, but we are also doing well in Iowa and South Carolina. And our chances to win in Kansas, and Alaska, and Montana, and Georgia are real, and even possibly Mississippi and Texas have become competitive. Who knows, maybe we can hold onto Alabama if Trump keeps melting down, or even send Mitch packing from Kentucky.
I'll be adding to my Senate candidate list of small donation recipients.

(17,235 posts)So the DNC should be racing to help those running for Senator in Kansas, Alaska, Montana, Georgia, Mississippi, Texas, and Alabama.
We cannot get this country back on track by having McTurtle block everything that would made Democrats look good. That's how Moscow Mitch leads the Senate, does this make R's or D's look good or bad? In my deep red town Barbara Bollier (D) has about 10 yard signs to (R) Marshall's 1. The DNC should get busy helping these future Senators, we need every one we can flip.

(6,008 posts)explicitly writing him off might get them all angered up over the betrayal.
That's the other side of the coin for them. If they piss Trump off (which they certainly could do), he would stoke up his minions to vote against Republicans (or to leave the Senate race blank).
To them, the only thing worse than a liberal is a turncoat Republican.

Of course considering its Trump I would not count on that ever happening so enjoy owning everything he did forever just like those that were members of the Nazi party in Germany will always own everything Hitler did.

(3,495 posts)Mitch and his friends will do anything to prevent court appointments or needed legislation going through. Obstruct if they don't get their way has been their MO for the past decade so don't expect it to end unless they are swept out of power.
The Senate is more important than the presidency.
Without the Senate, President Biden will have a whole lot of nuthin.
With the Senate but without the presidency, congress can take away the Supreme Court's jurisdictions and any of the president's toys. It could also make a much more entertaining impeachment trial happen.

(8,292 posts)But at this point, I'm just going to sit back, give another ten bucks to Biden (after my exam today), and enjoy the inevitable implosion of the GOP. This strategy of non cooperation and no compromise adopted after Obama's election, might have given them some sparkly treasures in the short term (lots of judicial nominations to federal courts, taking control of the narrative, passing horrible legislation that pleases donors and screws the working class, etc), but I'm looking at the long term not being so pretty for them.

(8,820 posts)If we don't tie or control the Republican Senate, WASF.
In the last two years of Obama, the RepubliCON controlled Senate brought Obama to a standstill by constantly thwarting and obstructing every last single thing he tried to do. The key is the Senate Control.
AND in reality, we are still a long way from the election. Remember at the last minute of 2016 how Comey basically won the election for Trump by disclosing that the FBI had "just received" Hillary's emails, when in fact they had already been thoroughly analyzed and dismissed because they contained nothing? Did't matter....In my opinion, he alone, despicably won the election for trump with that announcement......
Expect other things like that in the upcoming days, all the way until Nov 3rd. (And thereafter, it will only get worse, trust me)

(2,195 posts)If they do keep the Senate and are derelict in their duties then Biden should use temporary appointments and emergency decrees to simply go around them. Their not voting is the same as no votes.

(43,161 posts)They were so busy trying to own the libs, they forgot their Constitutional Oath, their morality, their integrity.
They have some 'splainin' to do, and not just to themselves and their party. To America.

(15,286 posts)cable shows yesterday. He said Dems were projected to lose seats in the House this election, but now projections are a gain of 10-15 seats and likely win enough senate races to take control of the Senate. He said he'd never seen anything like the numbers he's seeing now.
Cornell Belcher was on with Chris Hayes a couple days ago. He said how Hayes would always talk about this or that being the catalyst that would collapse Trump's number and how he would always reply that Trump's base was solid and wouldn't abandon him. But this time. Belcher said the numbers looked to him very much like a collapse in support.

(47,430 posts)We really need majorities in the Senate and the House if we are to undo all the damage Trump and the republicans have done.
I think it is time for a lot of republicans in DC to retire. It looks like it is too late to redeem themselves after four years of kowtowing to Trump.
DeminPennswoods
