White House Preparing $1.8 Trillion Stimulus Proposal
Source: WSJ
The White House is preparing a $1.8 trillion coronavirus-relief offer, according to people familiar with the discussions, partly closing the gap in negotiations with congressional Democrats as time runs short to pass any package before the election.
Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) spoke Friday for roughly 30 minutes about a GOP plan that attempted to address some of the concerns Democrats have, according to a spokesman for Mrs. Pelosi. The spokesman said negotiations are still seeking an agreement on language on a Covid-19 public-health plan, as well as the overall funding level.
The White House proposal increases its previous offer by about $200 billion, but a significant distance remains between the administration and Democratic leaders on the bills overall price tag. Democrats last week passed a $2.2 trillion aid package, a scaled-back version of their earlier $3.5 trillion legislation. Mr. Mnuchin had previously proposed a $1.6 trillion offer.

(5,376 posts)Adding 4 new justices would be a hard sell, even for Democrats. Two will be more likely, with the promise to nominate Merrick Garland for one of the seats. Nominating anyone else would be an insult to Obama, who deserves to have his selected nominee seated.

(8,020 posts)From WaPo: A Republican strategist close to McConnells office, granted anonymity to discuss internal GOP thinking, said that there was substantial opposition to the deal both within the administration and among congressional Republicans, predicting that a package of around $2 trillion would receive the support of maybe 10 Senate Republicans. Conservatives are expected to push against the deal.
White House adviser Larry Kudlow said the new contained aid to airlines, small businesses, $1,200 stimulus checks, and the unemployed. Both sides have supported these policies. They also had appeared to settle on $75 billion for coronavirus testing and tracing, although Democrats continued to push the administration for language on a comprehensive testing strategy, something Pelosi said Friday remained unsettled.
