Instead of a debate we have competing forums on different networks. The first and actual debate was enough. Trump roils the debate format with Biden. Even putting them in a virtual debate would erupt into Trump screaming. Networks have to give equal time. Biden will discuss the issues on ABC while Trump thrashes about on NBC. Trump will make headlines, Biden will make progress.

There is more risk to Trump here than to the Biden campaign.

We're in a ratings game now. This means that there are Nielsen numbers that will track not just totals but who switched off from one to the other (or lost interest altogether). I suspect that at the end of the night, people will be tuning Trump out and his numbers are going to be MUCH lower than Biden's, in a format that the pundits will then go to town with (Mr. President, you've been cancelled!). It is also likely to drive Biden's numbers up, simply because of the knowledge that Trump is pulling this crap, and the awareness that there are two town hall events. Finally, Trump can't interrupt Biden this way.

Biden is pulling too far ahead of Trump so the media is starting to lose its prized horserace that is necessary to pull in the ad revenue.
