McConnell shoots down $1.8 trillion coronavirus deal, breaking with Trump
Source: The Hill
McConnell's comments, made to reporters in Kentucky, underscore the divisions between President Trump and Senate Republicans on a fifth coronavirus package, with the GOP leader preparing to force a vote on a $500 billion bill next week.
I dont think so. Thats where the administration is willing to go. My members think half a trillion dollars, highly targeted, is the best way to go," McConnell said, asked about the prospect of a deal between $1.8 trillion and $2.2 trillion.
McConnell added that while a reporter was correct that there are negotiations ongoing between House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and the White House about the higher price range, "that's not what I'm going to put on the floor."

(15,407 posts)If Trump and Pelosi reach a deal, there will be a tremendous amount of pressure put on Mitch from Trump.

(24,284 posts)His leadership and his coalition are falling apart. I predict he may have trouble getting all the votes he needs for Squeeky Barrett, too, at least before the election. Look at the polls. People don't want it.

(15,407 posts)We have 47, assuming we all vote yes. Pence would break a 50-50 tie.
And people now do want Barrett.

(15,407 posts)Not sure if you saw it, but I added a response about Barrett.
Also, it's almost certain that 3 Republicans would vote Yes if Trump pressured them to. My guess is 25+ would cave. The only way it wouldn't work is if Mitch refused to put it forward.

He's probably relieved to not be responsible for governing anymore.
Now the GOP can go back to disrupting, obstructing, bombthrowing like they always have.

An interesting question for Trump tonight would be: McConnell has said he won't bring a negotiated stimulus bill to the Senate floor for a vote. Does this mean he has given up on you winning?

(95,247 posts)This stance by McConnell suggests he is writing off Trump, and hoping to present such chaos to Mr. Biden that in two years Republicans can run against 'Biden failing' and retake the Congress, a' la 2010. Not voting for aid may of course risk defeat in a general election, but likely not in a primary, which Republicans congress-critters have come to fear far more than the former. The 'x' unknown in the figuring is will a break with Trump hurt bad enough in the next primaries to make these more dangerous than his 2022 plan can support.

(33,335 posts)He wants to spend 1/3rd of what the House has already passed. "Highly Targeted" is his typical meaningless horseshit.
In other words, he doesn't want to pass a bill. He's basically telling Trump to get fucked. He wants to go back to terrorizing a Democratic President.
Burn the Senate to the ground.

(10,039 posts)This is to show that, specifically, Senate Republicans don't perpetually fellate Trump. ...as they ram through his illegitimate SCOTUS pick. Same as DeJoy and the Post Office. Reverse your changes and pretend you're doing it altruistically when your really doing it because your FLA base really, really, wants to vote by mail.
