A man has suspended himself off the top of Trump Tower in Chicago, and is reportedly threatening to jump if he doesn’t get to meet the US president Donald Trump.

The man, who is said to be in his twenties, used a harness to climb up the 16-floor building and was first spotted at around 5.30pm local time. He was still dangling several hours later on Sunday evening, as authorities tried to convince him to get down.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the man said that he wants to speak to the president and has threatened to cut the rope he is hanging from if this wish isn’t fulfilled.

“I am protesting,” the man was quoted as saying. Videos of the incident have been filmed by crowds below, while the man also appears to be filming himself.

CHICAGO (CBS) — A SWAT team was on the scene at Trump Tower Sunday evening in Monday morning after a man suspended himself from a landing at Trump Tower and threatened suicide.

Chicago Police spokesman Tom Ahern confirmed the situation was “resolved peacefully” and the suspect is in custody after nearly 13 hours of negotiation. No injuries were reported.

Ahern said the man was suspended from a landing at the 16th floor of the skyscraper, at 401 N. Wabash Ave.

At 5:27 p.m., Chicago Police officers and a SWAT team, as well as Fire Department personnel, were called for a man threatening suicide from the landing.

A social media video appeared to show the man saying he wanted to talk with President Donald Trump.

SWAT negotiators were at the scene trying to talk with the man Sunday night and were still at it as of the 10 p.m. hour.

CBS 2’s Steven Graves reported the man was dangling from a rope. He appeared to be wearing a climbing harness in the social media video.

A police SWAT unit and the Chicago Fire Department had responded to a call of a man threatening to kill himself at the Trump International Hotel & Tower, 401 N. Wabash Ave. in the Near North neighborhood, around 5:30 p.m. Sunday, according to police. Ahern said the man rapelled down the outside of the building; he was seen hanging by a rope several feet below the ledge to the right of the large “Trump” sign on the building. ...

Cmdr. Patty Casey, who heads the youth investigations unit, said a Russian interpreter was called to the building and employees at the building also aided in the peaceful outcome. In a media briefing after the conclusion of the call, she hailed crisis negotiators, including Detective Hector Matias, who was on scene nearly 14 hours after spending some 17 hours at a different call over the weekend.

“They were patient and kind and spent hours dealing with this distraught man who was in an apparent crisis, saying he had many social issues that he wanted to discuss with reporters,” Casey said. She and Ahern did not immediately explain what the “social issues” were.
