Pope Francis suggested in a documentary that premiered on Wednesday, (October 21), that gay people "have the right to be a part of the family" and threw his support behind "civil union law", so that same sex relationships can be "legally covered".

And it's safe to say that Franklin Graham is not impressed.
In a lengthy Facebook post on Thursday (October 22), Graham hit out at Pope Francis, branding his comments "unthinkable in light of the Word of God"...

Instead of worrying mostly about their own supposed salvation, it's mostly directed outward at others.
Many of them have the idea that God will punish the entire country, them included, unless they take action.
That's the root of the problem imo.
The Amish don't seem to have a problem living their own lives mostly in peace, for example, without forcing their beliefs on everyone else.
Edit: And the irony about their increased political activity from the 60's forward is that the country has been worse-off in many ways since they did it. They'd like to return to a period when Evangelicals were not so political -- e.g., MAGA. So why don't you try that again, Evangelicals?!
