Viral photos show McConnell picking up a face mask, revealing his right hand to be much darker than the rest of his body, as well as a bandaged thumb.
Last updated on October 22, 2020, at 5:36 p.m. ET
Mitch McConnell, the 78-year-old Senate Majority Leader currently running for reelection, is denying any health issues despite photos showing his hand bandaged and severely discolored.
On Wednesday, photos went viral of McConnell bending down to pick up a dropped face mask on Capitol Hill the day prior, revealing his right hand to be much darker than the rest of his body and that his thumb is bandaged.
McConnell's office did not respond to numerous requests for comment from BuzzFeed News about the health of the top Senate Republican, who is up for reelection in Kentucky in just under two weeks.
However, when asked by a reporter on Thursday about his health and the concerning photos of his hand, McConnell denied there was an issue.
"Do you have some kind of health issue?" asked Politico reporter John Bresnahan. "Everyone been's talking about your hands."
....................
"Of course not," replied McConnell.

This page lists 1/4" x 1-1/2" ones: https://www.healthproductsforyou.com/p-a3m-steri-strip-adhesive-skin-closure-strips.html
That's probably equivalent to the ones I've seen and used. Steri-Strip is a 3M brand name, the ones I had were not labeled that way, probably some generic version.
volstork
(5,400 posts)they are just cut to size. He likely had some sort of injury to his hand that required use of SteriStrips and also caused bleeding under the skin.

(4,605 posts)Shes been off it for over a year, but it made her skin super thin. Even the lightest bump against a doorjam leaves gigantic, awful looking bruises. If she really whacks into something the results look horrifying. Thats the first thing I thought of when seeing the Mitch pics- very similar to Mom.

(15,082 posts)My Mom was on prednisone for years. Her skin was like tissue paper. She always wore long sleeved tops because of the bruises.
Wonder what's going on with Mitch?

(9,822 posts)thinning of the skin. Any needle stick, slight bump leaves horrible bruising. Fortunately never as bad as what MMc is going thru.

(13,492 posts)On prednisone since I was 18 and am in my 60s. Yes I have thin skin from it and bruise easily, but never anything like that just by bumping it. Maybe he fell and landed on that hand or slammed it in a car door. Its also possible he is on a blood thinner. That causes horrible bruising as well.

(23,292 posts)The only times I've seen a hand that looks like that is when an IV cannula has become dislodged from a vein during the administration of an extremely toxic drug. Chemo drugs can do this, so can dilantin for seizure disorders.
This doesn't look like ordinary bruising, it looks like there's some underlying tissue necrosis.

(23,292 posts)He was on blood thinners. Occasionally, you would see blood drops on the floor. His hands and arms looked just like that. I'm sure there were other issues, but the medications added to the problems.

(15,278 posts)to me. Maybe he tripped over something or lost his balance. Those are the kind of bruises the elderly can get from a fall because their skin is thinner and bruises much more easily. Saw it with my own parents.

I think that McConnell probably got the paper cut and infected it by inserting that finger up his anus.

(24,282 posts)lack of circulation due to any number of reasons, some of them already mentioned here, such as blood clots, small trauma, like a fall combined with blood thinners.
She does say it's very serious and he may be in danger of losing the use of that hand if not lose the hand itself.
With nothing to go on but a few pictures, it's just speculation, although it's speculation by a retired RN with 40+ years of experience. Meaning this is not the first time she's seen something like this.

(51,584 posts)for his heart, etc. The blood thinner make skin tear, bleed a d bruise easily. I know someone who bruised and bled easily when on blood thinners. It may be for his heart and blod clots. Since his lip is also bruised he probably fell (unfortunately it wasn't from his high horse).
I saw this earlier and since is on his upper lip and both hands people have suggested this is typical of the medications.

If the latter, it will get worse and spread. Internal organs can't be seen of course, but it will be worse there if it is systemic blood vessel leakage.
I've had a bruise like that. Felt sick for weeks after. Mitch shouldn't be at work like that.
