Report: Right-Wing Militia Groups 'Pose A Serious Threat' To Voters

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by applegrove (a host of the Latest Breaking News forum).

Researchers found that swing states are particularly vulnerable to militia activity around the 2020 election.

................
............

Over the past several months, private militias “have become more assertive,” the two organizations found in a report published Thursday, titled “Standing By: Right-Wing Militia Groups & The US Election.” The report cites kidnapping plots targeting elected officials and interventions in protests throughout the country. Parts of Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Oregon are at the highest risk of increased militia activity around the election, it says, while parts of North Carolina, Texas, Virginia, California and New Mexico are at a moderate risk. The report identifies the Three Percenters, Patriot Prayer, Proud Boys and Boogaloo Bois as groups that pose a “high” or “very high” potential for violence.
...................
.....................

When militia members were arrested earlier this month for plotting to kidnap Michigan’s Democratic governor, Gretchen Whitmer, the president seemed to delight in their animus toward her, encouraging a “lock her up” chant at a campaign rally in the state days later. His son Donald Trump Jr. has asked “every able-bodied man, woman to join the Army for Trump’s election security operation,” an effort to recruit poll watchers who believe Democrats are trying to steal the election.

...................
.....................

Militia activity is expected to be higher in competitive spaces like swing states, the report found, where armed groups may work to repress votes for Trump’s opponents. Armed groups appear to be particularly active in areas where there have been protests against the lockdowns aimed at limiting the spread of the coronavirus — an effort militias perceive as an assault on their freedom — and places that have seen Black Lives Matter protests — which militias view as “leftist coup” activities.

Locations where militia members have friendly relationships with members of law enforcement are likely to see higher levels of militia activity, the report found. In Kenosha, Wisconsin, law enforcement officers were recorded on video handing water to a group of militia members and telling them, “We appreciate you guys, we really do,” shortly before 17-year-old vigilante Kyle Rittenhouse fatally shot two people in late August. .......................................

Once Biden admin is in office Beto should he assigned head of the task force to bam all assault rifles. Will get ugly before it gets better but its best for the country in the long run. We cannot have these kinds of domestic terrorists bullying &wreaking havoc on Americans in our own country.

No more buying, selling, trading, borrowing, inheriting, or giving away of assault type weapons. Any weapon found not
registered or in possession of someone other than registered owner gets destroyed and somebody gets fine/jail. And
stop the manufacture of new ones and any new gun designs appearing to be assault type weapons. Just a thought,
doubt if congress would do anything similar being afraid of voters.

I'm 68 and watched it all the time as a kid (still do on reruns) and I knew the bullets were silver, but never knew why. Nor did I know he owned a silver mine. Wow!

His nephew, Dan Reid, used the proceeds of the mine to buy and become publisher of the newspaper, The Daily Sentinel. Dan Reid eventually turned control of the paper to his son, Britt Reid who, unbeknownst to everyone (including Dan), split his time working the newspaper by day, and fighting crime by night as the Green Hornet.

19. I did a cursory spreadsheet on cost of guns.

Very small sample but the numbers were interesting.

I did it after CBS did a story about a high school put in a pretty good system to go into lockdown, secure sections of building, call police, and incapacitate gun man for police to arrest. It was a real high school in Ohio, and the system was paid for mostly by outsiders.

CBS mentioned the cost to put it all together. So, I took that cost and divided it by the number of students in that school = cost per student.

Expanding on that...What would it cost to harden all the schools in Maryland? (Thought the “well-regulated” gun owners should pay for that. I don’t see why I have to subsidize the costs of gun ownership to protect public schools from gun owners.)

- Got the # of high school students in Maryland.
- And number of guns in state.
- So, the cost to harden all schools in MD? (Number of students x cost per student)
$460 MILLION!

Think the state of Maryland has that kind of money?

- Took that and divided by # of guns.

It’s on my other computer but I think it came close to $5,700 PER GUN!
Let’s call that the use tax!

An AR-15 in Maryland = $1,300
Add Sales tax (using the % for alcohol) = $1,427.
Add in the use tax = $7,127.
That’s what it should cost to buy an AR-15 in Maryland.

And since it’s a use tax, NEXT YEAR renew that $5,700 use tax, just like we do with property taxes.

Meaning: Total 10-year cost of ownership of an AR-15: $58,000.
Per gun.

When states increased the “use tax” on cigarettes to cover the damage costs incurred by them - people stopped smoking.
When the price of gas got over $4 a gallon, people stopped buying gas guzzlers.
That can happen with guns.

With an ammo tax, because each bullet fired at the range or for fun at one's house has a cost, they will think twice before using.

Of course, politics is the art of the possible. We need to make it expensive however we can, since we will not be coming for their guns.

For some of them, if you listen to their reasoning, they want guns to stop the gov't from coming for their guns.

Supporters of a right-wing group are planning to gather in an Orange County park on Saturday.

Their presence is part of the American Patriotic Council's nationwide Freedom March, prompting fears of potential voter intimidation near a polling station. Saturday is the first day of early voting.

The event invitation encouraged participants to carry guns and invoked the upcoming election, but made no specific reference to the voting that would be taking place that day at the adjacent senior center.

Montgomery is loaded with right wing types. Funny how they have to import others

Now they are moving outside of town. Uber-Trump assholes abound.

trump is the one who is promoting voting in person. Sadly his plan is to yell and scream to count the election day votes and not the mail in/drop off ballots.

Just as happened in VA when a bunch of trumphumpers showed up and tried to block the entrance to the voting place. Extra security was called and they were moved back 40 feet which is the law in VA.

did not have that problem at all (Williamson County - a red county that i'm hoping will turn purple at least, with the influx of newcomers from blue states). Hubby made sure he was w/ our kiddo & i, and nearly a 2-hour wait in line first day of voting but neither such presence of heckers nor goonies with guns were spotted near our voting place. The usual trump-pence & GOP candidates signs were there but everyone was civil and everyone wore masks. The voting was quick & orderly.

Bottom line in some places like GA & OH there may be some bad behavior by these crazies but i doubt it will deter people from voting. People are sick & tired of the endless abuse by this Con & the GOP. Nov 3rd we get to finally turn off that faucet of insanity & let freedom ring.
