Mike Pence to 'Inexplicably' Attend Senate Vote on Amy Coney Barrett Despite Close Staff Testing Pos
Source: Newsweek
Vice President Mike Pence says he will be in the U.S. Senate Monday to vote in favor of Judge Amy Coney Barrett's Supreme Court nomination, despite his closest aides all testing positive for COVID-19 over the past week.
Pence told NBC News Sunday during a campaign stop in North Carolina, "I wouldn't miss that vote for the world," as he is set to return to Washington to cast his vote confirming Barrett as a justice.
But doctors, Democrats and the former FDA commissioner all said Pence is putting the elderly senators at risk by continuing to campaign and physically attending Monday's vote. Five of Pence's closest aides, including his chief of staff, tested positive for coronavirus within the past few several days and have been quarantining since mid-week. Another personal aide to Pence reportedly tested positive Sunday on the campaign trail.
Pence, who is the head of the White House Coronavirus Task Force, issued a statement Saturday saying his actions are within Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) pandemic guidelines because he is "essential personnel." New cases and increasing hospitalization numbers have skyrocketed in several states where Pence has campaigned over the past week.

Sharing the love. He only needs to be there in case a tie breaker vote is needed which seems unlikely.

(26,280 posts)Mitch and some of the other Republican leadership in private beforehand is that the deep red states that suck up more federal taxpayer money than they put in will be facing draconian cuts once the Democrats gain the Senate.
Also that the Democrats will be seeking to increase SCOTUS to 13 or more seats as soon as the new Congress is sworn in and that the Democrats will take a page from the Republicans playbook and ram through all the new justices within 90 days or less.

Its just rubbing it in a bit. And will be good for his base.

(4,549 posts)I figured with Murkowski being a yes, they would have enuf.
I wish there were a few surprises but I fear not.
We will need to wait all this out, get our wins for President and Senate and House and then act quickly on legislation and convince Biden we need to rebalance and expand.

(2,343 posts)Announcing "the plan." Fire up the base and take away even a modicum of this disgusting woman's limelight.
My vote is to go to 13 justices. An added bonus is Alito is 70, and Thomas is 72. Biden may set the record for SCOTUS appointments. A Democratic Senate will make for a smoother process, with fewer headaches!

(38,958 posts)I would just get the plans together and get started on them in January.

(2,343 posts)He said he'd announce if/when the Republican jammed through Barrett.
Some things to announce:
--expand to 13 seats
--initial appointments:
1. Merrick Garland (of course)
2. Amy Klobuchar
3. Mazie Hirono
4. A very liberal existing federal judge under 50years ofage
--blue ribbon commission to recommend additional reforms (e.g. new SCOTUS building to accommodate more justices and personnel, consideration of term limits or max age, etc.)
Sherman A1
(38,958 posts)A statement condemning the action of the republicans certainly, but I wouldn't announce any plans.
TwilightZone
(25,456 posts)He shouldn't announce anything until he wins. There's zero upside and plenty of downside, including motivating Rs to show up on election day.
Don't rock the boat when it's about to run over your drowning opponent.

(8,327 posts)I hope the Democratic Members if the Senate call attention to his unnecessary selfish visit to the Capitol.
He can ONLY vote if there has been a tie. The whip count shows there will not be a tie so he is just bringing Covid for fun. Hopefully they will keep him on the Republican side of the Senate Floor.
Maybe he knows something we dont like some unhealthy Covid positive members wont be there.

(790 posts)They want to spread Covid-19 around as much as possible, sickening some -- possibly killing others. This is pathological and demonstrates the contempt that Team Trump actually holds for their supporters and the people who work for him. You're not a part of the team if you show up for work wearing a protective mask. Loyal Trump supporters show up for the sardine can mask-less rallies then wind up in the ICU a few weeks afterwards. It's not that far different from suicide cults like Heaven's Gate or The People's Temple: sacrifice your health and/or your life to be a part of the team. You just don't expect it to be operating in the open at the White House:
