They're begging the court to block deadline extensions for mail-in voting during a pandemic.
Republicans are once again petitioning the Supreme Court to rule against mail-in voting.
The GOP has zeroed in on Pennsylvania and Wisconsin in efforts to effectively disenfranchise mail-in voters in two battleground states. Both states have recently been at the center of Supreme Court rulings involving extensions for mail-in ballots.
Now, Republicans are asking the Supreme Court to reconsider a Pennsylvania mail-in voting case one that saw the court narrowly ruled against the GOP last week.
In that case, the Supreme Court upheld a lower court's decision to allow a mail-in voting extension to stand with a 4-4 vote. Under this ruling, Pennsylvania mail-in ballots could be counted if received up to three days after Election Day.

(4,739 posts)You'll lose some R votes, but on the whole it'll tip the balance away from the D's
Thankfully this is simple enough to get around - if you're in PA and haven't mailed your ballot yet, go vote early. I mean, I expect they'll even try these shenanigans in NY, that's why my mail ballot was received Valid over a week ago.

(9,313 posts)In addition to the polls showing a big differential in Biden vs. Trump voters intentions to vote by mail vs. vote on election day, tactics aimed at disenfranchising those who tend to vote later are also a means of suppressing votes from younger people, who historically "procrastinate" a bit relative to older voters (in WA, with 100% mail in, there is a pretty substantial age difference in "early" vs. "late" arrivals).
One dilemma the Republicans face is that on election day there will both be a higher percentage of Trump voters, and a higher percentage of younger voters who "put off" voting to the "last minute." They will undoubtedly offset this by ensuring there are long lines in Democratic strongholds, and no lines at all in areas that are more evenly divided or lean Republican.

Of course, it's up to the states to run a federal election for some reason and TBH, it would make it hard to verify you're from the right state, never mind district even for all the down ballot races.

(9,313 posts). . .there is absolutely no will to address the problem.
We need a Federal Law that imposes fines on states that create long lines by underallocating resources. Fines that are so large it hurts -- and makes it far more cost effective to run an election in which voters can cast their vote with ease (and be confident that vote is counted).
I also hope that this election has paved the way to 100% mail in. (Every voter receives a mail-in ballot by default. Voters may submit completed ballots by mail or deposit them at designated drop sites. In-person voting is available to all voters at designated voting centers.)
Republicans can fight tooth an nail, but the examples of the high integrity of the systems in the states that use it, and the many, many, safeguards possible with 100% mail in, can't be denied.

(14,675 posts)All they need is 4 justices to vote to hear a case and it gets heard.
It doesn't have to follow any logic or external test.
Now they would be justifying court reform by doing it, but they have probably already come to the conclusion it will happen either way, and if they work aggressively enough either trump or the senate will survive to protect their majority.

(9,313 posts). . .they are going for disallowing counting of any votes after election day, regardless of time of arrival.
The six black-robed traitors have already stated their "new" legal principle in the Wisconsin decision: Votes that "flip" election day outcome shouldn't be counted."
Those States want to avoid the chaos and suspicions of impropriety that can ensue if thousands of absentee ballots flow in after election day and potentially flip the results of an election,
And this is echoed by Trump's "good and proper" to make election day results "official" -- no matter how many votes remain to be counted. This is their "go to." They know it is insane, but with six on the court to endorse it, they are laying the groundwork.
It's FL 2000 on steroids. Stop counting legitimate votes because it could "flip" Bush's victory.
Our ONLY remedy if they pull it off is to win the House and Senate, and TOSS OUT the electors from any state that fails to count every legitimate vote. It doesn't matter what SCOTUS says. When it comes to determining the legality of the appointment of electors, it is up to Congress.
Congress utterly failed to do their duty in 2000 and toss out the electors appointed pursuant to an incomplete, and therefore unlawful election, in FL. They cannot fail to preserve democracy this time if the black-robbed traitors attempt to pull off a coup again.
And the NEXT step would be to impeach the traitors on the court for attempting to overturn the will of the people. If you didn't read it back in 2001, read "None Dare Call It Treason" (Nation article or later book)

(3,491 posts)Last time in FL the Republicans had control of the state offices and the SC basically agreed with the state apparatus to stop the counties from continuing to canvas. That will not be the case this time because the Gov and Sec of State are Democrats. I would guess a SC decision to stop the vote counting and the State and some counties decide to ignore it, then the State legislature, which is currently Republican, would have an opening to seat electors IF Trump is ahead in the vote count at that point. There are a lot of ifs here.
I do remember Republicans extending deadlines to take overseas military ballots during the 2000 election. Guess any PA military will be SOL if they come in late (but I doubt it, they'll be given special dispensation if Repubs think those votes will help them).
This all sucks (but my vote is already processed as received, as is my wife's and two kids).

My ballot has been accepted but probably not counted yet (Minnesota).
Wisconsin won't even begin counting votes until election day. I don't know if that was some fucking "judge" or the legislature or what. I'm not talking about tallying totals, I'm talking about like even removing the ballots from the envelopes.
Minnesota has already been counting them (dunno how long that will last). And it will accept ballots postmarked by Nov 3 up until Nov 10 (the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals is expected to weigh in on the latter this week).
https://www.mprnews.org/story/2020/10/26/minnesota-ballot-count-is-on-but-for-how-long
.... [processing the mail-in ballots] Its a time-intensive process. ... [somewhat described in the article]
Deputy Elections Manager Heather Bestler [in Ramsey County, MN] said if the counties didnt have two weeks to do it an extra week than normal this year it would have been a big problem, given the volume of people voting by mail. In her county, 130,000 votes have been cast already.
It would not have been possible to process, Bestler said. We dont know what the ultimate count will be for the number of absentee ballots but there wouldnt have been enough time or space to process that many ballots in the usually allotted time.
The tallies themselves wont happen until polls close on Election
... The ballots are verified and scanned into software that will automatically begin counting the vote at 8 p.m. on election night
In neighboring Wisconsin, none of those ballots can be processed until Election Day.
Then describes the long canvassing process to check the tallies ...
But if the Supremist Court arbitrarily and capriciously shuts down the counting when it looks like it might go the "wrong" way, like they did in Florida in 2000.... or is simply taking "too" long... as determined by the majority of the Supremist Court ...

(9,313 posts)Although it's mainly my fears expressed in my posts, I have a lot of hope too. A Biden win big enough that their efforts to steal are are crushed is likely. It's just not as likely as most are predicting. I look at the fivethirtyeight The winding path to victory (about halfway down the page) and see too many states that are "stealable."
One of my biggest hopes is that Trump's lunacy has sufficiently dampened the enthusiasm of a enough of his supporters to significantly suppress his turnout.

I don't want Biden putting any Repubs on the cabinet. You can't trust them. I want to have confidence in our path forward. Now, listen, Joe...no Repubs in the Cabinet!
This is just disgusting.

States should ignore restrictions that fail to count all the votes. This is a fascist power grab. States need to grab their power and not surrender to Trump's Court. I think in PA the Governor has to sign off on the electors. That's about the final result of Presidential elections.
