Voter registrations of DeSantis, Michael Jordan and LeBron James accessed by Naples man, FDLE says

Source: Tampa Bay Times

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement arrested 20-year-old Anthony Guevara on Tuesday night on one count of unauthorized access of a computer and one count of altering a voter registration without consent.

A Naples man used a computer to alter Gov. Ron DeSantis' voting registration and attempted to get into the voting registrations of U.S. Sen. Rick Scott, retired basketball icon Michael Jordan and current basketball icon LeBron James, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement said.

The FDLE arrested 20-year-old Anthony Guevara on Tuesday night on one count of unauthorized access of a computer and one count of altering a voter registration without consent. Guevara is being held in Collier County jail on $5,000 bond.

According to an arrest report, when DeSantis went to vote Monday afternoon in Tallahassee, he learned he was no longer listed as a Leon County resident. Instead, his address was that of a one-floor rowhouse-style condominium on Pretty Lane in an unincorporated area of Palm Beach County.

A witness who watched the exchange said that the clerk did not recognize DeSantis and told him that their records showed he had changed his address the previous week. The governor responded that he moved to Leon County two years ago and had voted there in the last two elections.

The clerk quipped, “Do you happen to have any friends in Russia?” The governor looked befuddled, the witness who asked not to be identified said. He then provided proof of his current address, which lists the governor’s mansion.

If one 20 year old was able to do this without any special tools or assistance, how are we supposed to have any faith at all that the russians aren't busily altering records or even changing vote totals?

On purpose, especially in a college town like Tallahassee so that students who move often are not blocked from voting.

The idiot who did this really made no effort to cover his tracks, also covered in the article.

There is always a voter database cut off date.
This date, stops more new voters from being added or information changed in a state's voter list.

This cutoff date is when the poll books are printed.

(Poll Books: Usually two books, one for the county and one municipal, that voters sign before given a ballot.)
That cutoff date is anywhere from the Friday prior to election day to several weeks prior to an election date.

This is done so the voter list being printed has been validated as accurate.

The clerk's can also see if there was a wave of registrations or changes, which a hacker would likely want to change as many as possible. If a 'wave' is seen, the clerks can take action to make sure the changes were valid by contacting the voter directly.

I would think, in the future, a simple two-factor validation, for any changes to be made to the actual voter database could easily be implimented.

A court could also rule on those cutoff dates, for each state. if the database did show a wave of changes.

I was similarly surprised when I had my oldest brother's mail forwarded to me.

I'm his financial and medical POA, but the post office didn't require any verification! I started pulling out his ID and the POA paperwork, and the clerk looked at me like I was crazy and told me to just fill out a change of address form and that's it!

Surprised this isn't more commonly done as a cruel prank by some people!
