Two dead after knife attack in Nice, France; mayor says 'everything suggests' it was a terror attack

Source: cnbc

A man armed with a knife on Thursday killed two people and wounded several others at a church in the French city of Nice, police have confirmed to NBC News. They added that the suspect had been injured by police and is now in hospital.

The city’s mayor, Christian Estrosi, tweeted that “everything suggests” it was a terror attack.

The attack took place inside the city’s Notre Dame church at around 9:10 a.m. local time (4:10 a.m. ET) and comes 13 days after French middle school teacher Samuel Paty was killed in Paris.

It presents a problem for some of our more doctrinaire members. When members of a minority are sometimes followers of a dark age religious cult it creates a quandary.

If the killers were members of a Christian death cult who happened to be native French there would be no limit of discussion. I hate self censorship but like my DU posting status.

One of the victims was reported to be a 70-year-old woman who was beheaded in the church. A man, believed to be the church warden, was the second victim. A woman in her 40s was critically injured and managed to run from the church but died of her injuries.

Police described the scene as a “vision of horror”. The national anti-terrorist prosecutor said an investigation had been opened into “killings linked to a terrorist organisation”.
...
Also on Thursday, there were reports that a man carrying a knife and threatening passersby in the street at Avignon had been shot dead by police.

The shooting happened at 11.15am, just over two hours after the Nice attack. Police opened fire after the man reportedly threatened them.

The first thing I think of when someone tells me that they are a muslim is how do you support a religion based on the Koran. Same with christians and their bibles. It means they are compartmentalizing with reality. I realize religion is also part culture, so it makes that much harder to put aside, at the risk of alienating friends and family and support systems, which is, by design. A lot of power is invested in maintaining the hierarchy of religion. As we have seen, leaving can be life threatening. And that is insane.

It reminds me of that great song "Ball of Confusion"

Segregation, determination, demonstration, integration, aggravation,
humiliation, obligation to our nation

Sure enough on my last night I was accosted and the perp took 200 Euros out of my pocket. I didn't resist so I guess that's why I wasn't stabbed.

Maybe it still is. You would never know it happened until sometime later. The thieves were pretty skilled, and depended on the fact that very few people who saw what was happening would say anything.

The man who stabbed two women and a man to death in a church in France arrived from Tunisia days ago, officials say.

The suspect, 21, had an Italian Red Cross document, issued after he arrived by a migrant boat to Italy's Lampedusa island last month. He was shot by police and is in a critical condition.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-54742403

French officials have identified the man responsible for the Nice attack as Brahim Aouissaoui, a 21-year-old Tunisian who had recently arrived in France from Italy, which he had reached by boat in late September. Both the Conflans murder and September’s Charlie Hebdo attack were committed by 18-year-old immigrants. Abdouallakh Anzorov was a Chechen who came to France at the age of six, probably from Moscow. Ali Hassan left Pakistan at 15 to be smuggled to Europe.

The trial started last month; and then there was a attack outside the Charlie Hebdo offices. Then the teacher was murdered. Now this - the killer arrived in France in the morning, and went straight to the church:

France's chief anti-terrorism prosecutor, Jean-François Ricard, said in a news conference that surveillance footage showed the suspect arriving in Nice via the city's railway station on Thursday morning, where he changed his clothes.

The suspect then walked the 400m (1,312ft) to the Notre-Dame basilica, which he entered at 08:29 local time (07:29 GMT).

There, he attacked and "virtually beheaded" an elderly woman, while a church worker received fatal wounds to the throat.

A second woman managed to escape the church and reach a nearby bar, but later died of her injuries.
