Report: Trump admin document says Billie Eilish is “destroying our country and everything we care about”

Today, the Washington Post reported that a $250 ad campaign ostensibly designed to "defeat despair" caused by the coronavirus pandemic was tailored boost Trump's re-election chances. Little surprise there, right? As Trump's appointees and contractors considered which celebrities to ask to star in the ads, candidates were flat-out rejected if they were seen to be opponents of the president and his policies.

According to leaked documents obtained by the Post, the Trump administration was not keen on asking Billie Eilish to participate: the documents describe Eilish as “not a Trump Supporter” and “destroying our country and everything we care about." It's not revealed how the Trump administration reached this equally terrifying and hilarious conclusion.

Out of 274 celebrities considered, 10 were approved. Other rejected celebrities included Jennifer (for her Super Bowl performance which criticized Trump's immigration policies), Justin Timberlake ("publicly endorsed Obama and supports gay marriage," according to the Trump admin document), and Christina Aguilera (“is an Obama-supporting Democrat and a gay rights supporting liberal”). Celebrities who made the cut included actor Dennis Quaid, Dr. Oz, and Billy Ray Cyrus.

The entire campaign has been put on hold, and none of the filmed ads have aired on television. The brains behind the campaign, Trump’s Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Michael Caputo, is currently on a 60-day leave after a Facebook Live broadcast in which he baselessly told Trump supporters to prepare for an armed insurrection led by left-wing groups.

Eilish's debut studio album, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? (2019), debuted atop the Billboard 200 and became the best-performing album of 2019 in the US.[2] It also reached number one in the UK. The album contains six Billboard Hot 100 top 40 songs: "When the Party's Over", "Bury a Friend", "Wish You Were Gay", "Xanny" and "Bad Guy", the last of which became her first number one single in the US. In 2020, she performed the theme song "No Time to Die" for the James Bond film of the same name, which became her first to peak at number one in the UK.

Her accolades include five Grammy Awards, two American Music Awards, two Guinness World Records, three MTV Video Music Awards, and one Brit Award. She is the youngest person and second person ever to win the four main Grammy categories – Best New Artist, Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Album of the Year – in the same year. In 2019, Time magazine placed her on their inaugural "Time 100 Next" list. Additionally, Eilish is the 23rd biggest artist of the digital singles era, according to the Recording Industry Association of America, selling 37.5 million singles in the US alone

Why is she so breathy, like she's got asthma? How come pop singers now can't sing a sustained melodic line with some force behind it? Everything is choppy and thumpy and nervous.

I don't think rap is music because it does not have varying melodic pitches. It's spoken word with some bass under it.

Where they show the play counts of artists; 10 most popular songs (although there's a time component where an artists more recently popular stuff gets a leg up over older tracks with more listens in terms of ordering and/or making the top 10, so there's that).

Safe to say the Spotify is very popular with young people. All people really, but especially young people.

How about we check the listens for an artist one would assume is very popular ...

Or perhaps a staggering popular and beloved classic rock group ...

And then here's listens to Billy Eilish ...

Wherein, when I did a rough count of Billie's two biggest hits alone ... they have close to as many listens as the entire Top 10 of the Beatles. And 7 songs more popular than any Beatles song. Granted the Beatles have a LOT more songs so I'm sure their total listens are higher overall. But yeah ... Billie's pretty friggin' popular

The documents show that Trump political appointees and the contractors they hired also vetted celebrities for the public health campaign based on whether they had ever criticized the president, or supported former president Barack Obama, gay rights or same-sex marriage. Of at least 274 celebrities under consideration, only 10 appear to have been approved, according to a document the lawmakers obtained.
...
The administration ultimately approved only 10 celebrities to participate in a PSA program: actor Dennis Quaid; gospel singer CeCe Winans; singer Marc Anthony; Hasidic singer Shulem Lemmer; Mehmet Oz, known as the television doctor Dr. Oz; country singers Billy Ray Cyrus, Miranda Lambert and Garth Brooks; former basketball player Dwyane Wade; and singer Enrique Iglesias.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Degenerate_art

Degenerate art (German: Entartete Kunst) was a term adopted in the 1920s by the Nazi Party in Germany to describe modern art. During the dictatorship of Adolf Hitler, German modernist art, including many works of internationally renowned artists, was removed from state-owned museums and banned in Nazi Germany on the grounds that such art was an "insult to German feeling", un-German, Jewish, or Communist in nature. Those identified as degenerate artists were subjected to sanctions that included being dismissed from teaching positions, being forbidden to exhibit or to sell their art, and in some cases being forbidden to produce art.

MoMA recently presented an exhibit of some of these works:
https://www.moma.org/calendar/exhibitions/3868

Here's a painting the loutish dumbasses (the Nazis, that is) thought was "degenerate":

André Derain. Valley of the Lot at Vers. 1912
André Derain’s Valley of the Lot at Vers was removed from the Wallraf-Richartz Museum in Cologne. In 1939, The Museum of Modern Art purchased the painting from Karl Buchholz, one of four art dealers acting on behalf of the German Government, and his partner Curt Valentin, a German-Jewish immigrant who had settled in New York after fleeing Germany. Feeling fortunate at having acquired the painting, MoMA director Alfred H. Barr, Jr. stressed the continuity of the work within the French tradition, stating that "the Derain painting, far from being radical, is a severely disciplined landscape in a modern classical style derived from Cézanne and Poussin."

It's very instructive to look under the hood to see how it's put together. The song uses 36 tracks, relying on various software tonal and percussion instruments to support Billie's vocals. Her brother, Finneas O'Connell, did the production.

This video is by somebody else, but it's a good overview for the music nerds who want to learn more about how this song was produced:

I don't listen to her music, but I respect what she does. She sings well. I happen to have other tastes.

I am no Ariana Grande fan, either. I think she sings well, too. I respect the way she handled things after the bombing at her concert.

Not many performers or celebrities seem to like Trump. Boo fucking hoo.

Have you noticed that there is no music in the current White House? Past Presidents had all kinds of concerts. Trump is more than just a philistine. He is a troglodyte.

The administration ultimately approved only 10 celebrities to participate in a PSA program: actor Dennis Quaid; gospel singer CeCe Winans; singer Marc Anthony; Hasidic singer Shulem Lemmer; Mehmet Oz, known as the television doctor Dr. Oz; country singers Billy Ray Cyrus, Miranda Lambert and Garth Brooks; former basketball player Dwyane Wade; and singer Enrique Iglesias.
Three of them sat for interviews about aspects of the pandemic, which were to be used in the ad campaign, but as of Oct. 1, all had withdrawn their consent for those interviews to be used, according to a document included in the letter.

The list is just likely people who *haven't* come out vocally against Trump, and I'm glad to hear that all participants withdrew support after figuring out what was going on.

I think Lorde is brilliant, for example.

Taylor Swift has some great songs, as does Lady Gaga and Lizzo. Beyonce is incredible in terms of production. And I must admit that even Miley Cyrus has grown on me with some of her more recent work.

But Billie Eilish...I don't dislike her--and I'm glad she has emerged as an outspoken advociate--but I just don't find her music very interesting. For one, it's barely audible. I'd consider her more of a spoken word artist than a singer.

I also like Lorde and Lady Gaga.

I honestly wouldn't know if a song was Taylor Swift singing if you played it for me ... I've probably heard some of them but likely not more than 1 or 2 times and didn't know they were her. I don't know what she sounds like IOW.

in the opinion of our "Stamp out the vote" aka republican party.

FWIW, I think she's absolutely amazing. She doesn't exploit her body (quite the opposite, she purposely wears baggy clothes to avoid that kind of attention). She is pro-LGBTQ in a big way (even though she's straight). She gets a TON of crap online from haters, to the point that she is afraid when she wins awards because the hate gets amped up to 11. And she wins a lot of awards, and for good reason.

I don't particularly love very many of her songs, but these two
--Bellyache
--My future

are completely stunning (in a good way), in my opinion. Way beyond her years musically speaking.

I can't remember exactly what she said, but it had something to do with objectification of the female body. She and her brother are very talented, IMO, and don't need to overshadow that talent with seeing how much skin she can show.

Trump administration vetted political views of 274 celebrities for botched $265 million Covid ad campaign, House lawmakers say

The “PSA Celebrity Tracker” used by HHS details the political views of more than 200 celebrities considered for the campaign, according to an internal HHS document dated Oct. 23 that was produced by contractor Atlas Research.

The document lists the political leanings of various artists, their arrest history, drinking or drug problems, sexual misconduct or sex tapes as well as which segment of the population they appealed to.

Singer Adam Levine is a “Liberal democrat who supported Obama and fights for gay rights,” but he appealed to the general population as well as to “super spreaders.” Also popular with “super spreaders,” singer Lady Gaga hasn’t “specifically claimed any political side,” although she vocally supported Hillary in 2016, according to the list. Actor and singer Neil Patrick Harris was popular among the LGBTQ community as well as the general populace. He also “Performed at the Republican National Convention in 2016,” the document notes, “but appears to be a liberal Democrat.”

Of actor Danny Devito, the document says pointedly: “Democrat, hates Republicans.” And actor Jack Black is “known to be a classic Hollywood Liberal,” according to the document.

Another document from Atlas, dated Sept. 29, includes notes from a meeting with HHS officials where they said the PSA with comedian George Lopez is “Not moving forward due to previous concerns regarding his comments regarding the President.”
