Elizabeth Warren wants to be Joe Bidens Treasury secretary and will make her case for it if he wins next week, according to three Democratic officials who have spoken with her inner circle, Politico reports.
Warrens moves could set up the marquee fight between the partys left and its center over what will be one of the most consequential Cabinet roles in the next administration. The Treasury Department will be tasked with steering the U.S. economy out of a deep recession, even as the country continues to struggle with the coronavirus pandemic.

(125,357 posts)Warren has never done trial work and has no experience in federal criminal law outside the financial area. Someone like Sally Yates or Preet Bharara would be much more suitable. Let Warren do something suited to her area of expertise - finance and consumer protection - unless she stays in the Senate.

(12,046 posts)They can control the interim senator the governor chooses for 5 months either by designating a party or even submitting a list of choices. The GOP legislature in NC passed such a law.

(3,321 posts)Elizabeth Warren is eminently qualified for that position, but it would mean giving up one senator.
She can do more good for our nation in the senate. She was my first choice in the primaries, but not to be I suppose.

(42 posts)Ditto with Sen. Sanders who seems to be lobbying for a cabinet position as well, in a state with a Republican governor.
If the Democrats win the Vermont governor race, it could raise his prospects.
But all depends on what the configuration of the Senate will be politically.
If the Democrat can win 53 or 54 seats , it will open up a lot more opportunity for senators seeking jobs in the cabinet or as an ambassador.

(10,260 posts)My fear of course would be that her senate seat would go to a repug and we need every single one.
That being said, Warren's former student and protege Katie Porter would also be fantastic as Secretary of the Treasury.

(12,678 posts)Without that majority, absolutely nothing will happen for at least two years. Both Vermont and Massachusetts have Republican governors who will appoint Republicans to fill those seats. Senator Coons has also been mentioned for a position. At least his state has a Democratic governor. Warren and Sanders need to wait until we have a secure Senate majority. Anything else just throws the whole Biden agenda into the trashcan Mitch McConnell is holding.

I don't think I care that she's left or center. She's honest.
And Wall St. quakes at the mention of her name.
And Katie Porter would be a great head of the IRS.

(11,728 posts)Dems have a supermajority in MA and can legislate the Governor's choice.
Upthevibe
(9,591 posts)I don't understand what that means and it makes me REALLY nervous if it meant taking ANY change at all that we'd lose her seat even if we are sure that the Dems would legislate the Governor's choice...It still makes me way too nervous....(but maybe that's because I don't completely understand how that process would work so I can't defend my position -about wanting her to stay in the Senate- if I don't really understand the other position....
