WASHINGTON The Justice Department decided more than a year ago to effectively shut down its civil-rights investigation into the high-profile killing of Tamir Rice, a 12-year-old Black boy carrying a pellet gun who was shot by a Cleveland police officer in 2014, according to people familiar with the matter.
Career prosecutors had asked in 2017 to use a grand jury to gather evidence in their investigation, setting off tensions inside the department. In an unusual move, department supervisors let the request languish for two years before finally denying permission in August 2019, essentially ending the inquiry without fully conducting it.
But more than a year later, the department has yet to take the bureaucratic steps to close the case, like completing a draft memo explaining why it declined to indict anyone. And it has not told the Rice family or the public that it will not charge the police officer.
Subodh Chandra, a former federal prosecutor who is representing the Rice family, said Tamirs mother, Samaria Rice, was devastated. When Samaria Rice heard the news, she cried out repeatedly, Im not ready for this! Mr. Chandra said. The federal investigation was her last hope for justice. Accountability was so important to her and her family.

Sorry, I get annoyed when the facts are distorted like this. A 'pellet gun' is a dangerous weapon. An airsoft gun, especially a pistol ... is not.
This is a despicable outcome for this poor family.

(6,265 posts)when murdered by a coward posing as a police officer. And Tamir was killed by the murdering police officer-coward 1.5 seconds after arriving on the scene. And this happening only after some other person had called about a child playing in the public park with a toy gun. I have always wondered the RACE of the caller and the police know who it was. The two police officers were white.
The trump-Barr 'justice' department has done its job, again. Deny justice to all minorities of brown-hued skin, no matter the age or gender. I am speculating at this very moment as to whether a small white child would have had the police called in the same scenario and would the coward who killed 11-year-old Tamir Rice have murdered that white child 1.5 seconds after arriving on the scene? And the Supreme Court appeal is lost before it has even started. Especially with the new Constitutional "originalist" justice appointed recently. What does "originalist" mean? All black Americans will become 3/5ths of a person again? Women will be searching out the back alley coat hanger crews for abortions or fly to other countries if able to? What the hell does being an "originalist" mean?
I am sickened by the continuous race-based hypocrisy both historically, Emmitt Till comes to mind, and continuously since 'freedom' was granted to American slaves way back when.
White American racial politics, Atwaters 'Southern Strategy' pops into mind and unbroken racial hate toward brown-hued skin has reached A nadir under this sociopathic animal posing as a POTUS who has dangerously made the United States the Divided States.
Tuesday will be THE defining moment for this democracy to either try again to start healing, politically and racially or continue devolving into an abyss that will be impossible to climb out of.
