People flooded to the streets in the Turkish coastal city of Izmir after the earthquake, witnesses said.
Turkish media showed wreckage of a multiple-story building in central Izmir, with people climbing it to reach rescuers. Smoke was seen in several spots in the city.

Turkeys Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD)put the magnitude of the earthquake at 6.6, while the U.S. Geological Survey said it was 7.0. It struck at around 1150 GMT and was felt along Turkeys Aegean coast and the northwestern Marmara region, media said.

Turkeys disaster and emergency authority (Afad) said 12 people died when the quake, measuring about 7.0 in magnitude, struck at 2.51pm local time (11.51am GMT) on Friday. One of the dead had drowned, Afad said.
Two people were reported to have been killed on the Greek island of Samos.
The death toll is expected to rise, with the mayor of İzmir telling CNN Türk that at least 20 buildings had collapsed in the city. İzmir is home to 4.5 million people and serves as a gateway to several holiday resorts.
