President Donald Trump, his campaign, and his supporters are gearing up to manufacture a political crisis on Election Day.
The president declared at a rally on Sunday that the winner of Tuesdays presidential contest must be declared by the end of the daynever mind that states routinely take days or even weeks to tally up presidential vote totals and certify official results. The comments came shortly after a report from Axios that the president is planning to preemptively declare himself the winner on Tuesday if early returns from in-person voters, in enough states to give him an electoral college win, appear to be tilting in his directioneven though the full tally of mail-in votes from states, which are expected to more heavily favor Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden, will still be out.
Trump denied the report. But in a quick briefing with reporters, he pledged that his team of lawyers would move quickly the night of the election to petition the courts to, ostensibly, challenge the legitimacy of a category of ballots that were mailed in before the end of Election Day but arrived after it was over. Different states have different laws that govern those ballots, but the Supreme Court has already ruled, in several cases, to allow their submission based on the applicability of state laws. Trump called the courts rulings terrible.
Were not gonna let that happen to us with these ballots, he had declared at a campaign stop earlier in the day. Does this mean we go and we wait, so its not Nov. 3, its much later than that? We should know the result of the election Nov. 3, the evening of Nov. 3. Thats the way its been and thats the way it should be.

He can't sustain a claim that ballots were "found" (manufactured) after the election, because it still has to all add up.

(15,523 posts)When it comes to conceding the election and then leaving the White House when it is time, he will hang on for dear life.
In a nationally embarrassing scene, he will have to be led out by US Marshalls at 12:01 on January 21.

(8,665 posts)The only deadlines are those set for the EC and for tallies which relate to that. Certification takes various paths and times depending on each state and how it is organized to count, recount and certify. Most states have a process of initial ballot results that must then be reconciled and certified, typically during the week or 2 following election day. This is the period when, if there are challenges or issues to resolve that process will then take place.
Trump's fantasy that there will be material to challenge, or even certified numbers before midnight in states as large as Pennsylvania, disregards how the votes are counted and reconciled and has no bearing on real voting process. He is deliberately conflating the press calling a state or a race won, presumably based on exit polls and previous historical results, with the state board of elections certifying a win, or a loss.
