Kremlin: Putin won't congratulate Biden until challenges end

MOSCOW -- Russian President Vladimir Putin won’t congratulate President-elect Joe Biden until legal challenges to the U.S. election are resolved and the result is official, the Kremlin announced Monday.

Putin is one of a handful of world leaders who have not commented on Biden’s victory, which was called by major news organizations on Saturday. But President Donald Trump's team has promised legal action in the coming days and refused to concede his loss, while alleging large-scale voter fraud, so far without proof.

When Trump won in 2016, Putin was prompt in offering congratulations — but Trump's challenger in that election, Hillary Clinton, also conceded the day after the vote.

Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters Monday that this year is different. “Obviously, you can see that certain legal procedures are coming there, which were announced by the incumbent president — therefore this situation is different, so we consider it correct to wait for the official announcement,” he said.

Donald Trump is giving his idol Vladimir Putin one final gift before he leaves the White House: Undermining US international standing by claiming without evidence that there was some sort of election fraud that stole the presidency from him. Now Putin, and other dictators can go preaching around the world how the United States has no credibility talking about democratic values because their own president says they have fraudulent elections. If the US president says it then there must be substance to the claims, Putin will say.

And of course all these slimey Republicans, like for example Ted Cruz and Lindsey Graham, who parrot Trump's claims instead of denouncing them are equally complicit in weakening the US. What's even worse is that Cruz and Graham, who are both lawyers, know full well that Trump's lawsuits are just a show, lack merit and hence have no chance of succeeding in the courts. And even if they succeeded they wouldn't change the election result. But Cruz and Graham will repeat these bogus claims because they are goading their voter base for their own personal gain and political success. At the expense of the United States.
