New York governor issues new restrictions as U.S. grim records mount

NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York Governor Andrew Cuomo on Wednesday imposed a new round of restrictions aimed at curbing the spread of the coronavirus as the infection rate climbed and hospitalizations soared in the state that was the epicenter of the U.S. outbreak in its early stages.

Cuomo ordered bars, restaurants and gyms in the state to shut down on-premises services at 10 p.m. nightly, and capped the number of people who could attend private parties at 10.

The new measures, which take effect on Friday, came a day after California and several states across the Midwest tightened restrictions on residents on Tuesday to try to curb the rapid spread of the virus.

“This is our LAST chance to stop a second wave,” New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio tweeted on Wednesday, as he announced the city-wide seven-day average rate of coronavirus tests coming back positive had hit 2.52%.

Most going into state mandatory quarantine for 2 weeks. My daughter hunkered down up there over the summer rather than come home, all her classes remote.

when the testing shows hotspots pop up, rather than doing it citywide.

which would be statewide but it's not a "lock down" (or close to one) like what happened in the spring, where literally, like here in PA, everything but "essential businesses" were closed. What Cuomo just did is similar to what we are imposing here in Philly this week (the shutdown of restaurants after 10 pm). During a "lock down", all restaurants/bars were closed. Period.

For their more restrictive ("lock down" ) targeted stuff (in NYC) you have this - https://www.governor.ny.gov/news/governor-cuomo-announces-updated-covid-19-micro-cluster-focus-zones-1

I know all the governors are trying hard to not go "lock down" again but I am afraid at some point, they might have to do it - even if just for a few weeks. That seemed to be the only way to (as was said over and over and over) "flatten the curve" and get the level of community spread down. I noticed that term is not even being used anymore but it should be.

Hell, right now, PA has blown past our peaks from the spring, although I know that is also due to more testing, where in the spring, thousands and thousands of people who were asymptomatic or pre-symptomatic positive, were missed.

My daughter is not happy. I told he to hunker down in the apartment and study her ass off. Forget about going out.

And all I can imagine is just whole swaths of a generation getting messed up later in life by the aftereffects of this virus.

I remember day after day where my local news radio station would play NJ. Gov. Murphy's pressers and he gleefully opened up venue after venue after venue, just wantonly, while across the river here in Philly, we were overly cautious and hunkered down. But there are quite a few bridges that separate PA and NJ and I knew that the movement between states would happen and ultimately be detrimental, as people in Jersey seemed to get some hidden signal that it was okay to party down and people here went over there to join in and bring the virus back.

Now Murphy has slammed on the brakes with his usual tsk-tsk-tsk bad Johnny attitude. We're screwed.
