Alito's wife leaves hearing room in tears

(Washington-AP) Jan. 11, 2006 - At one point Wednesday, the wife of Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito left his confirmation hearings in tears.
Martha-Ann Bomgardner has been sitting behind her husband for hours of questioning over several days.
But she left as Alito was being questioned by Republican Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina.
He asked the nominee if he is "a closet bigot." Alito said "no" and Graham responded "No sir, you're not."
Graham's question came following others by committee members about Alito's membership in a controversial Princeton alumni group that opposed the admission of women and minorities. He has said he doesn't recall anything about it.
Bomgardner returned to the hearing room after a committee break, smiling and holding her husband's hand.

Lindsey was doing that "thang" Republicans all do when Democrats questioning Republicans in hearings bring up their vicious beliefs for discussion: "Oh you poor poor baby. Did that dirty old Democrat attack you mercilessly?"
