Florida Sticks to No Statewide Restrictions Amid Pandemic

Source: MSN

MIAMI—As new coronavirus cases soar to record highs around the U.S., many states are reimposing restrictions on daily life. Not Florida.

Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis is sticking to one of the most permissive approaches to the pandemic—allowing bars, restaurants, theaters and theme parks to operate at full capacity. He has vowed the state would never again implement lockdowns.

Local governments’ ability to enforce mask mandates and other restrictions is constrained under an executive order he issued in September. And he has spotlighted researchers who advocate pursuing herd immunity by allowing younger and less-vulnerable people to move about normally and expose themselves to infection.

Florida had 27 new coronavirus cases per 100,000 people in the past week, compared with 198.9 in North Dakota—currently the hardest-hit state—and 46.2 nationally, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But the numbers of new cases and hospitalizations in Florida have been steadily climbing for weeks, based on data compiled by the Covid Tracking Project. On Saturday, the daily case count reached nearly 10,000, the highest since late July.

It is interesting that there have been a lot of attacks on California because of its large case numbers because it is the largest State in the United States with a population that is almost twice that of Florida. Yet, when you look at deaths per 1,000,000, California is not even in the top half of States. Of course, you have New Jersey and New York, which were hit hard toward the tail end of winter this year. But surprisingly, you also have Arizona and Florida, which were hit much later in the pandemic in summer.

Currently, the hardest hit states on a proportionate basis are smaller states like North Dakota and South Dakota whose leadership have taken a very anti-restriction stance. For example, North Dakota's death rate is now 20 times higher than California's. Yet, the larger states will get the focus based on sheer numbers.

is that I don't trust the numbers coming out of there. I don't believe there's only been 27 cases per 100,000 people.

activities this time of year because of their climate. That might might make a difference, but it does seem that they would still have a higher rate than that.
