Andrew Cuomo To Receive International Emmy For 'Masterful' COVID-19 Briefings

Source: NPR

The Emmys have always had a soft spot for politicians. In the past two decades, the annual television awards have dealt out nods or outright wins for a slew of famous names: There's Selina Meyer, for one, not to mention Josiah Bartlet and Claire and Frank Underwood, among others.

The thing is, most of those politicians are, you know, fake.

The International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences announced Friday that it is breaking with tradition and awarding its International Emmy Founders Award to a real politician who is currently in office. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is being honored his daily coronavirus briefings earlier this year.

"The Governor's 111 daily briefings worked so well because he effectively created television shows, with characters, plot lines, and stories of success and failure," the academy's president and CEO, Bruce Paisner, explained in a statement announcing the decision. "People around the world tuned in to find out what was going on, and New York tough became a symbol of the determination to fight back."

To add insult to injury, trump was nominated for TWO Emmy Awards and lost both times.

Take that, Donnie Dollhands!

It was reassuring to know that there were governors who stepped up and fought this virus. It also allowed sound information to be shared that proved the curve could be stamped down. Too bad more people did not watch and understand what could have happened with proper information.

Who'd a thunk it!

but his leadership abilities and exceptional communication skills are impressive. He is POTUS material in my book.

That said, if he does harbor thoughts of running for the highest office in the future (he's only 62), i certainly hope we don't end up with Chelsea Handler as his FLOTUS

Talk about flattening the curve!!

I cannot bear the thought of someone as foulmouthed as her and who dated the likes of 50 Cent being First Lady

and I'm sorry for this.

I watched a dozen or so of those briefings, at times they were helpful. But I take issue with the idea that a briefing, to help his state (and others) is theater. To conflate the two, diminishes the role of governing.

Cuomo made good TV? He's in charge of one of our most populous and important states. I HOPE that he did not (effectively) create a television show with characters, plot lines, and stories of success and failure.

Reality TV comes to the governorship?

I hope he turns it down.
