Putin holding off on US presidential congratulations

Source: AP

MOSCOW (AP) — President Vladimir Putin says Russia is willing to work with whomever is officially declared the next president of the United States, but that he won’t offer congratulations until the winner is formally decided or a candidate concedes.

Putin’s remarks broadcast Sunday on state television reiterate earlier Kremlin comments on why Putin had not congratulated Joe Biden after major news organizations called him president-elect, as did many other world leaders.

“We are just waiting for the end of the internal political confrontation,” Putin said, referring to Republican challenges to the vote count.

”We will work with any person who will be given the trust of the American people. But who will be given this trust? It must either be indicated by political custom when one of the parties recognizes the victory of the other, or the final results of the elections are summed up in a legitimate, legal way,” he said.

He knows the jig is up. And making nice won't change the ramifications. He's played a very dangerous game for a rump state that hides behind its nuclear weapons. Their economy is a mess as usual. Violent crime and suicide are still epidemic. Their population is still shrinking and Russian males have a shorter life expectancy than Pakistanis. Short of their nukes, their military is as much a paper tiger as it was during the break up. A rogue state that's highly vulnerable to real, tough economic sanctions. One of the few things going for them is Western Europe's dependence on Russian nat. gas. I'm waiting for him to start playing that card this Winter.

Vlad has way too many problems to worry about as it is, without adding Repug voters' ire on top of all that.

And it's amazing about their male life expectancy being less than in Pakistan (!).

I remember when, back in the Gorbachev years, it was closer to the U.S. than to Pakistan.

Goes to show what 30 years of mismanagement will do (plus all that came before).

that Putin is enjoying the hell out of this. AND continuing to assist in any and all ways possible to continue his trying to divide and bring down the U.S. and Democracy.

Russian People are laughing their asses off at how easily Putin has played Trump & the greedy Republicans. Especially given the fact that he has done it without a war, or firing a single missile or rocket.......

If you think Putin has just been sitting around the last four years you need to think again.......He is developing his weaponry, his fleet of icebreakers, his submarine warfare capabilities, etc etc etc......

/snip/

Only the president can direct the use of nuclear weapons by U.S. armed forces, through plans like OPLAN 8010-12. The president has unilateral authority as commander-in-chief to order that nuclear weapons be used for any reason at any time.

/snip/

In Presidential transitions, the president-elect does not receive the actual nuclear code card until after the nuclear briefing, when "he meets with the outgoing president at the White House just before the actual inauguration ceremony. The code card is activated electronically right after the president-elect takes the oath at noon"[15].

Biden understands that Putin is still a KGB officer at heart, and an enemy of the United States. And, Putin knows that Joe is not inclined to take any shit from him.

...Biden recalled visiting Putin at the Kremlin in 2011: “I had an interpreter, and when he was showing me his office I said, ‘It’s amazing what capitalism will do, won’t it? A magnificent office!’ And he laughed. As I turned, I was this close to him.” Biden held his hand a few inches from his nose. “I said, ‘Mr. Prime Minister, I’m looking into your eyes, and I don’t think you have a soul.’ ”

“You said that?” I asked. It sounded like a movie line.

“Absolutely, positively,” Biden said, and continued, “And he looked back at me, and he smiled, and he said, ‘We understand one another.’ ” Biden sat back, and said, “This is who this guy is!”
