Trump set on veto of defense bill over renaming bases honoring Confederates

The president has told lawmakers he won't back down from campaign threat to scuttle defense spending bill over proposed changes.

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump is threatening to veto legislation to fund the military as one of his final acts in office unless a widely supported, bipartisan provision to rename military bases honoring Confederate military leaders is removed, according to White House, defense and congressional sources.

Since the Nov. 3 election, Trump has privately told Republican lawmakers that he won't back down from his position during the campaign that he would veto the annual National Defense Authorization Act if it includes an amendment to rename the bases. ... A senior administration official confirmed Trump's conversations with Republicans and his veto threat. "He's said that," the official said.

Trump's stance has put in doubt legislation that had been agreed to by Republicans and Democrats in the House and the Senate. It has sent members of Trump's party scrambling to find a path for the defense bill, which outlines military policy and funding, and put them on a collision course with Democrats.

While some Republicans are now shifting their positions to align with Trump, Democrats are refusing to budge on the agreed-to amendment, threatening passage of the legislation.

bin Laden killed ~3,000 Americans on 9/11 and we asked members of the military to put their lives on the line to avenge them.

Confererate leaders killed ~750,000 Americans between 1861 and 1865 and we're asking members of the military to continue honoring their legacy ?

I don't think so.

We certainly wouldn't be good with naming the next new base, or aircraft carrier the "Bin Laden"?

Call their bluff. Just F'ing call it.

After all, Trump 'tells it like it is'.

Some of them actually tried it.
I'm just surprised we didn't hear about anyone trying to turn themselves into a light bright and shove a UV bulb up their ass when he asked about using UV light.

I grew up down yonder (Alabama) and have never seen or heard so many willingly defiant ignorant people..."I ain't gonna wear no mask. The government told me to, so I ain't gonna!"

It holds to other issues too. That's just the current one that pisses me off.

In all communications with the Biden Administration, he shall be addressed as "Impeached ex-Pres. Trump."

Also, his oil painted portrait shall be hanged next to that of Pres. Obama. But, the height and the width of Pres. Obama's portrait shall be at least 20% greater.

Not surprising...

Apparently, he is entertaining some fantasy in which his 'very fine people' march en masse to D.C. in order to wage a war to keep him in power.

Bring it, bitch.

A veto would drastically set back the funding bill that's earmarked for things like gender-specific uniforms and body armor. It is particularly important that female soldiers have properly fitting armor.

And Biden, once President, can change the names via executive order with the stroke of a pen. Nothing the GOP can do about it either.
