Fauci says he's worried about what coronavirus case numbers will be 3 weeks after Thanksgiving
Source: CNN
Dr. Anthony Fauci's final pre-Thanksgiving plea is to keep any indoor holiday gatherings as small as possible as the country endures record numbers of Covid-19 hospitalizations and daily cases, he told ABC's "Good Morning America" on Wednesday.
With the US seeing unprecedented numbers of recorded infections now, he said he's worried about how much the virus will spread in holiday celebrations -- and what the pandemic will look like in three weeks when those new infections will have manifested.
"What we don't want to see is yet another surge superposed upon the (current) surge ... which we'll realize three (to) three and a half weeks from now" if people aren't careful, Fauci, director of National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told ABC.
Public health officials have generally urged Americans to celebrate Thanksgiving only with members of the same household, or at least gather outdoors, to avoid further virus spread. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also recommended last week that Americans should not travel for Thanksgiving.

(504 posts)No matter how much scientists and healthcare providers try to explain how lethal this virus can be for thousands of people, they keep running towards it. They only care about money. The coronavirus wasn't a problem until the stock market was crashing. Soon as congress pass PPP relief and the stock market went up, they act like there is no problem.

(790 posts)Back in March Dr. Fauci said that the pandemic could kill 100,000 to 200,000 Americans and infect millions. He has been dead on target about every prediction as to how bad it could get. At that time he also said that 1 million to 2 million American deaths wasn't impossible, but highly unlikely. I imagine that the history books will ponder as to how such a country, that was supposed to be so advanced in the world, got crushed for want of a mask and distancing from crowds. I see the terrifying graphs of infection rates per state. The latest charts show mostly straight vertical lines that climb near the top of the chart far outpacing the previous peaks since March. Dr. Fauci even commented on the misery of the out of control vertical line.

(16,934 posts)There was always the caveat: lower the curve, so we don't overwhelm the hospitals. Never got an assurance that if we wore masks, washed hands, social distanced, avoided crowds, that Covid-19 would go away. We did slow the rate of infection, but unfortunately many people didn't read between the lines. And were probably disappointed that their early effort didn't end Covid-19 entirely. Instead of seeing that our early effort to lower the curve worked, a lot of people said the hell with it. Too many don't understand that there is no instant gratification and there won't be. If we don't keep using the fragile safeguards offered, and too many people aren't, the estimated numbers of dead and impaired is going to be the higher numbers medical professionals stated at the beginning.
The genie is out of the bottle. This disease will plague humankind from here on in. Thanks to so many medical research scientists, there will be ongoing efforts to control and contain the disease. We are losing a huge number of people across the planet, and we are going to lose more.
I know I sound negative. I keep thinking back to the Pandemic of 1918-1920. Boths sides of my family, and both sides of my husband's family survived so that we are here. I am hopeful that between human ingenuity and human resilience, we will get to the other side of this hellish disaster.
