Iran's most senior nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh has been assassinated near the capital Tehran, the country's defence ministry has confirmed.

Fakhrizadeh died in hospital after an attack in Absard, in Damavand county.

Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, has condemned the killing "as an act of state terror".

Western intelligence agencies view Fakhrizadeh as being behind Iran's secret nuclear weapons programme.

He was reportedly described as the "father of the Iranian bomb" by diplomats.

For today, Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, said to have been killed, possibly by gunfire:

"Repeated gunfire followed the sound of an explosion.
- A vehicle was targeted.
- Three to four people killed, including the perpetrators.

Fars says eyewitnesses confirmed Fakhrizadeh's assassination"

Iran is a tough nut.

On edit. Israel sometimes takes risks other liberal democracies won't. It's a product of their history. Many times, they've not had a choice. This is one of those times.

It is possible it was an "inside" job, meaning they were recruited by a foreign government, to do this. Of course, it could be a "hit" by the Iranian government, if they felt he was compromised, a moderate, or some other factor. A truck bomb, on a busy highway with lots of traffic, and five gunman...not really the hallmark of Mossad or even the CIA. Then, again, it could be Saudi Arabia in an attempt to "prove" they are worthy of a US shipment of arms. Who knows.

This is a parting monkey wrench by Trump and Friends to sabotage our relationship with Iran for Biden's foreign policy. As one who has worked on Iran sister city relationship with my town, and who has visited Iran in 2008, I hope that Peace will prevail. Trump and Friends doing this is like controlling what happens after he leaves office. I hope that cool heads will return to the Iran Nuclear Agreement. And please don't call it a "deal", that is Trump talk. Deal is a word we use for buying a car, not an important international agreement with several countries.

1) They could be there because US knew about this assassination plan and wanted heavy bomber assets near Iran
2) They could also be carrying the bunker buster bombs that Israel needs if they are to target the underground facilities Iran built recently

Trump is stupid enough to trigger a major conflict with Iran and think that this will allow him to stay in office
