US Coronavirus: Nearly 60,000 Americans could die of Covid-19 in the next 3 weeks. There are ways to

There are ways to turn things around, experts say

America enters the somber holiday weekend following a Thanksgiving Day that saw more than 100,000 new Covid-19 cases and 1,200 deaths -- skyrocketing numbers given that 20 states did not report data.

Traditionally the start of a time of shopping and giving, the final days of November have seen record highs in the worsening pandemic -- surpassing previous surges and showing no signs of slowing down in the precarious winter months.

The US on Thursday marked the 24th day in a row with more than 100,000 new cases. Hospitalizations hit a new high -- for the 17th consecutive day -- with more than 90,400 Covid-19 patients nationwide, according to the COVID Tracking Project.

The country's death toll since the pandemic's start is now more than 263,000. And nearly another 60,000 people could lose their lives over the next three weeks, according to an ensemble forecast published by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention this week.

...snip...

"It we all got together, wore the masks and did the social distancing, we could bend this curve within two or three weeks," Schaffner said. "We would see actually transmission go down even before we get to the vaccines."

What it would take to turn the tide
While a possible vaccine candidate could soon get the green light, widespread effects of a vaccine are months away. Still, Americans right now have valuable tools that can help.

They are the safety measures touted by officials for months -- face masks, social distancing, avoiding crowds and practicing good hygiene, like regular hand washing.

These are simple steps that could make a world of a difference. More than 40,000 lives could be saved over the next two months if 95% of Americans wore face masks, according to projections from the University of Washington's Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation.

Masks have been proven to kill somewhere around 0% of jobs.

People don't like to wear masks. Even educated people who understand why, will still take it off indoors for various reasons because they find it uncomfortable or it fogs up their glasses or whatever. Americans just aren't as disciplined as the folks in Asia, New Zealand, and other areas that controlled this pandemic quickly.

several mayors are trying to stop all covid patient transfers to their hospitals from Red States and Red Colorado Counties who are refusing to enact the Red Level Warnings put in place by our Colorado Governor last week.

Sadly, medical ethics probably won't allow that and the RepubliCON courts will probably overrule their efforts.......

If you think the Sturgis Debacle fallout was bad, just wait three or four weeks for the Thanksgiving Debacle Fallout as a result of the massive Thanksgiving commingling from 70 million trumphumpers and the Religious still gathering across the entire nation in one room and singing without masks......

There could be a true conflagration across the entire U.S. just about the time Christmas arrives..........

Sadly? This is pure Trumpian. Is this the next step in our national divide?

Because we broke the news to my MIL and SIL that we were postponing our Xmas trip to FL until spring or summer. MIL even called her brother and had him try to get us to change our minds. Yes, dad has Alzheimer’s and at 85 this may be his last Xmas. He hasn’t known who we are for the last 2 years. We realize that, but I don’t think dad would want us to risk ourselves or extended family down there by traveling when it’s advised that everyone stay put. Especially when the 3 military grandsons, a dr granddaughter and a healthcare worker have all cancelled their trips as they’ve been told they can’t leave their areas due to COVID-19.

What really pissed me off was that MIL always plays people against each other to try to get her way. Any decision we make, even when we explain the reasoning, is never accepted. MIL insisted FL is fine, everything is open, and there’s not much virus there. She’s in Charlotte County, which is right next to the absolute worst ranking county in FL. When her brother called (from TX) he insisted we change our minds and go. According to his friend (a CDC retiree) it’s all blown out of proportion. It’s a flu, you get it, and get over it - nowhere near what the media and some politicians hype it up to be.

Due to all that, I had a totally crappy T’day. I told them both to check out CovidActNow.com.

We went out to do our contactless grocery pickup today. At house after house, the driveways were filled with cars. And those cars belong to people who have now brought their virus-infected selves to our town. We love where we live (western NC) because of the great scenery and good climate, etc., but we are in a town filled with deeply stupid people. (In this county, trump got 14k votes, Biden 6k.) It's depressing and scary.

All the businesses in San Diego require them, some people wear them in their cars, etc. People in my blue area have been really good about wearing masks since last Summer. The GOP-types used to protest a lot more than they do now. I think it is finally sinking in that this is a dangerous situation and people are complying a lot more than they were. I hope it lasts.

Mask wearing is much better than the summer when infections were going down. Obviously masks will not completely stop the spread, particularly when they aren't warn properly, which I see a lot. I also have to say the emphasis on masks probably does make people think they are safe with them, and don't have to social distance.

filling up the hospital beds so seasonal flu, stroke, heart attacks and pneumonia victims have some place to go.

50,000 a week on average need beds for those cases
