A group of men chanting 'Christ is king' tore down the monolith in California and put a wooden cross there instead
Sinéad Baker 11 minutes ago
A group of young men filmed themselves tearing down the mysterious metal monolith in a California town and replacing it with a wooden cross.
The monolith was found on Pine Mountain, a hill in Atascadero, California, on December 2. It was 10 feet tall and appeared to be made of stainless steel, local news outlet Atascadero News reported.
It was noticed after similar structures had appeared and then disappeared in Utah and Romania.
According to Vice News, the men livestreamed the video onto blockchain streaming site DLive under the name CultureWarCrimnal.

ATASCADERO, Calif. - A metal monolith that appeared atop a peak in Atascadero Wednesday was destroyed by vandals overnight.
A video streamed online shows a group of young men who traveled from Orange County to San Luis Obispo County and destroyed the metal object, replacing it with a makeshift wooden cross. The cross is no longer in the area.

The vandals documented their trip to Atascadero, streaming the five-hour drive and ensuing vandalism on the website DLive, an online video streaming platform.
In the video, at least three of the men are seen pushing the monolith down and chanting "Christ is King" and "America First."
The men in the video repeatedly make comments regarding Jesus Christ and at multiple times make references to aliens, both from outer space and undocumented immigrants.
Throughout the more than five hours of video, the men are heard making racist statements. At one point in the video, one of the men, dressed in military garb, is heard yelling at the other men in the video to sing "Battle Hymn of the Republic" and other military songs.
According to Vice News, which reviewed the entire length of the video, the men make references to white power and burning crosses.

(25,529 posts)them out as phonies. Don't know what the purpose of this stunt was, but it seems very doubtful that white supremacists would be embracing and singing the tune of the Union army as it marched into war against the slave-holding Confederates.
Seems more likely that racists would be singing Dixie.

The locals interviewed for local news seemed cheerfully intrigued by it and disappointed by its disappearance.

(13,384 posts)I dont care what religion you practice, even none at all, so long as you keep it private or in your own church. Thats what religious freedom is. But I have the right to freedom from religion. We need more lawyers to use freedom from religion in a pushback to all these religious freedom cases. Of course, with the current SC, theocracy isnt far away.

I mean, f*** these guys, of course, but ... what they did was not any more illegal than erecting the monolith was in the first place.

We can't have nice things because we always have some religious fucknuts always ruining things. Cuz Jesus would approve of vandalism guys... religion is a fucking mental disorder

(18,690 posts)So based on this specific action, one would argue that Arthur C. Clarke was right about our species and that Kubrick was mistaken.
Arthur C. Clarke's original ending for 2001 was far more pessimistic and predicted we would not evolve but would destroy ourselves.
Kubrick rejected it and went with the optimistic prediction that we would transcend our basest stupidities.

Much like the sculptor of the Wall Street Bull, who dropped it off without a permit in the middle of the night, and then complained when someone came along and installed Fearless Girl next to it.

The behavior of the men involved in this incident disturbs me because it is reminiscent of Islamic extremists blowing up statues of the Buddha that have otherwise endured for centuries. Even some forms of Islamic art and representation have been destroyed by such radicals because it contradicts with their own, specific interpretation of their faith.
