Rudolph W. Giuliani, the former New York City mayor and President Trump's personal and campaign lawyer, has tested positive for the coronavirus, Mr. Trump announced on Twitter on Sunday.

"@RudyGiuliani, by far the greatest mayor in the history of NYC, and who has been working tirelessly exposing the most corrupt election (by far!) in the history of the USA, has tested positive for the China Virus. Get better soon Rudy, we will carry on!!!" Mr. Trump wrote.

Mr. Giuliani has repeatedly been exposed to the virus through contact with infected people, including during Mr. Trump's preparation for his first debate against President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr. in September, as well as when he appeared with his son, Andrew, at a news conference at the Republican National Committee headquarters about two weeks ago. But Mr. Giulani had not been said to have contracted the virus until now.

It was unclear why Mr. Trump was the one announcing it. It was also unclear whether Mr. Giuliani, 76, is symptomatic. But at his age, he is in the high-risk category for the virus. Mr. Giuliani has been acting as the lead lawyer for Mr. Trump's efforts to overthrow the results of the election. He has repeatedly claimed he has evidence of widespread fraud, but he has declined to submit that evidence in legal cases he has filed.

The 76-year-old personal lawyer to the president was admitted to Georgetown Hospital Sunday in Washington Sunday. It is unclear when exactly Giuliani tested positive or the details of his condition. President Donald Trump tweeted the news earlier Sunday and wished Giuliani a speedy recovery.

As recently as Thursday, Giuliani was at the Georgia state capitol, where he asked lawmakers to overturn the state's election results and select their own electors. Video shows Giuliani entering the capitol without a mask and high-fiving a supporter. On Wednesday, he appeared at a four-hour Michigan legislative hearing to argue that fraud had occurred.

The diagnosis comes more than two months after Trump himself was stricken with the virus in early October. Since then, a flurry of administration officials and others in Trump's orbit have also been sickened, including White House chief of staff Mark Meadows and Ben Carson, the secretary of housing and urban development. Last month, Giuliani's son, Andrew Giuliani, a special assistant to Trump, said he tested positive for coronavirus.

The supporters who filled the packed ballroom at the Wyndham Hotel in Gettysburg a week ago may be at risk of testing positive for COVID-19, but it's unclear if the state is doing any contact tracing to find out.

"We have told Pennsylvanians who attended any large event to contact their health care provider if they have questions about their health and remind them that testing is available," said Nate Wardle, spokesman for the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

"We also have encouraged them to download the COVID Alert PA exposure notification application so that if they test positive or came in contact with someone who has, the app will provide anonymous notifications."

It's quite possible the attendees were exposed to the virus after spending hours in the room filled with mostly unmasked people where President Donald J. Trump's personal lawyer made unproven claims of election fraud.
