Initial COVID vaccine supply 10% of original government promise

The federal government plans to stagger shipments of coronavirus vaccines to help ensure that states don't run out of supplies, the Washington Post reports.
Why it matters: The Trump administration's current plans would make 35 million to 40 million COVID vaccine doses available instead of the 300 million doses originally promised. The "lower-than-anticipated allocations have caused widespread confusion and concern in states," the Post reports.
Local and state officials are rushing to change vaccination plans.
The number of vaccines available could pick up in January and February but will still be lower than the administration originally projected.
Pfizer and BioNTech have halved their original estimates of how many of their coronavirus vaccines would be shipped globally by the end of this year, citing supply-chain issues, the Wall Street Journal reported last week.

(65,219 posts)The companies never promised anything close to that.
They projected more than they will actually do, but 4 prior batches didn't meet specs (a problem now solved) and there are current limitations on raw material. (You know, the stuff the Warp Speed geniuses were supposed to be heading off.)
So, they'll end up producing only about 70% of what they thought by EOY.
But, it was PINO & the gang that promised enough vaccine so everyone in the US would get a first dose by January.
You're correct that no company ever made such a preposterous promise.

Then again we may not need as many doses as we anticipated. The death toll is rising at an alarming rate.

(15,290 posts)doses, but they were never going to come in one big initial shipment. That's why the CDC met to develop a vaccine distribution priority list. It's also why "the general public" has been told not to expect their turn for a vaccination for 4-5 months.
Since the approval data was submitted, the news has been 30-40M doses. It's been reported those are only enough to cover healthcare workers and LTC residents.

(8,780 posts)However, Astra Zeneca seems to be having problems with their vaccine and in one part of the study it was only 62% effective. Pfizer and Moderna sound way better. Also Astra Zenecas Vaccine is much cheaper than the other 2 because it sounds like it doesnt need freezing temps.

(22,174 posts)if so, I suspect that this is hurting the rapid deployment of this vaccine, but of course I wouldn't be surprised if Jarod K. screwed it up somehow...
Pfizer/BioNtechs vaccine requires the coldest medical storage available.

(15,290 posts)Moderna vaccine does not.
If you have a chance, you should watch the Dateline special on the vaccines were developed and what the distribution plans are.
There was never going to be 300M initial doses.

(22,174 posts)...rather far-fetched, eh, but then again, anything associated w/ the trump admin. is 'far-fetched' and unbelievable, if the 300 M estimate came from the trump admin or trump.
Take care and be safe, and thanks again!

There will be no logistical success until January 20th.

(21,414 posts)would be a logistical nightmare with a competent administration. I have a gut feeling that Trump isn't prepared. Too bad Trump didn't put someone in charge of procurement and distribution like Russell Honore instead of Jared.

(754 posts)The Sacramento Bee among others is reporting that CA was allocated 327k doses for December
[link:https://www.sacbee.com/news/politics-government/capitol-alert/article247512730.html|
That's about 1% of the "current plans" cited in the original article.
If one allocates doses by population, CA should get 10%.
327k doses (that is, enough for 163k people) doesn't come close to covering the health professionals targeted for the first wave of vaccinations.
Since this is just Pfizer's portion we have to add the Moderna allocation. Which is unknown, & will be at least 1 week later (ie into the holiday).
I hope this isn't going to be another Trump shit show, but I'm starting to get a bad feeling about it. They have no good history of understanding logistics planning.

(9,896 posts)to speculate about any of this at this point. This a massive undertaking with almost an infinite numbers of things that could go wrong. Plus an administration that is organically incapable of even understanding the concept of logistics. A year from now this will still be the big news, although some people will probably get vaccinated before then.
