Americans increasingly willing to get COVID-19 vaccine: Poll
Source: ABC News
With the U.S. on the cusp of an authorized COVID-19 vaccine, public health experts warn that even a highly effective vaccine won't help if people aren't willing to take it.
And while numerous polls throughout the fall showed many Americans were reluctant to take a hypothetical vaccine, now that there are two new, highly-effective vaccines on the immediate horizon, new polls are suggesting that Americans are more and more willing to get vaccinated.
A new Gallup poll published Dec. 8 shows that Americans' willingness to get the COVID-19 vaccine has ticked up to 63%.
In a recent interview with The New York Times, Fauci stated that vaccine uptake would need to be "at least 75%. Hopefully close to 80-85%" in order to achieve "herd immunity" and stop the virus in its tracks.

The eggshell of American anti-vax stupidity is showing cracks.
Education is the answer. So is science.
Run ads encouraging people to get covid-vaxxed. Encourage family members to get it.
Our voices are starting to be heard.

(5,526 posts)But there were two other problems that drove the overall reluctance.
One was that there was an obvious and overt political incentive to say it was ready even if it wasn't. Much of that has dissipated after the election and should disappear completely after the inauguration.
Second is simply mistrust in how quickly this came together compared to historical circumstances. I think that trust is being rebuilt by the results. It helps that multiple companies and multiple agencies from different countries are reaching a positive conclusion. I know it helps alleviate my concerns even though I was planning on getting it anyway.
It will also help when the roll-out gets going and the news stays positive. It is a lot easier to agree to get the shot after the first 200 million people already have successfully.
I think that number will continue to improve until only the actual anti-vaxxers are left. Not sure what that number is and whether it will get us over the hump.
I wonder if the vaccine can be converted to tranquilizer darts?

(26,732 posts)The numbers will continue to improve as the various vaccines roll out. There won't be enough doses to go around for months, so there's little need to push for more adoption unless/until there are more doses available than there are people to take them.
If someone who qualifies for the early doses doesn't want one... it will just roll to the next person (who otherwise would have been forced to wait).

Many of the staff I work with are refusing and planning to QUIT if our employer mandates it. So far no mandate...but really?

(7,809 posts)By the time I'm eligible, there will be millions of people who have taken it before me. That's plenty of data right there to base my decision on.
I'm in my early 60s with few comorditities, so it will be several months. Though I'm not a scientist, I am knowledgeable of STEM subjects and I know how vaccines work. Sign me up!
