Ohio mayor wants officer fired for not turning on camera during fatal police shooting

Police in Columbus, Ohio, fatally shot an unarmed Black man early Tuesday but did not have their body cameras turned on during the incident, leading the mayor to call for the removal of the officer who opened fire.
Mayor Andrew Ginther said he was greatly disturbed by the fact that the cameras were not recording the incident and called it "unacceptable" on the part of the officers involved.
"So let me be clear, if you're not going to turn on your body-worn camera, you cannot serve and protect the people of Columbus," Ginther said. "I have asked Chief Quinlan to remove the officer involved of duty and turn in his badge and gun."
The shooting happened in the 1000 block of Oberlin Drive and occurred more than two weeks after law enforcement fatally shot 23-year-old Black man Casey Goodson as he entered his grandmother's home. The investigation into his death, which drew national headlines, is ongoing.
Two officers in separate cars responded to a disturbance call about a running vehicle on Tuesday at around 1:30 a.m., where they found the 47-year-old man in the garage.

Not just fired, but prosecuted too.
To me, not turning the camera on is the same as admitting that they knew something bad was gonna happen.

(40,569 posts)Saw a running car in his neighbors garage and called in a nuisance call. Of course since the man they encountered was black, the police knew he was up to no good.
No weapon recovered from the scene. Were the police feeling threatened by a cell phone? Maybe this guy was done visiting whoever he was visiting and just warming up his car to go home?

The man they shot was a 23 year old just in the neighborhood coming home with Subway in one hand and his keys in the other.

(40,569 posts)Andre Hill, the 47-year old black man in the garage, was shot last Tuesday by a Columbus police officer answering a disturbance call, who had a history of complaints in his file, including use of excessive force.
Casey Goodman, the 23-year old coming home with Subway sandwiches, was shot on Dec. 4. by a Franklin County sheriffs deputy.
Both men were unarmed and apparently just going about their daily lives.
Id say that law enforcement in that area has a very big problem with black people and this egregious and senseless killing has to stop. What are the mayor and the police chief and county officials going to do about it? Prosecuting and punishing these Wild West cops would be just a start.

At the time of the incident I was watching "CSI:Miami" on Hulu, having awakened in the middle of the night. I didn't see or hear a thing.

(14,864 posts)and a gun, and you turn the body cam off and use the gun... that should be taken as an admission of guilt.
If Uber Drivers can figure out that they need cameras running all the time to protect themselves.. then people given the ability and right to shoot people dead can do the same. Or they can be made liable in both criminal and civil court.

Body cams to remain ON their entire shift. Be a lot fewer people killed.

I don't remember that one about being pathologically afraid of black people, but I think that is what a lot of cops are thinking and it makes a good excuse for being excessively violent.

(53,214 posts)If you are a cop in a potentially compromising situation, I'd think you would double check to be sure your camera is on, not turn it off.
LisaL
(47,423 posts)He didn't turn off the camera, he didn't have it on. He turned it on after the shooting, and thus the shooting itself ended up being recorded, although without sound.

(5,161 posts)I use a body mounted (actually it is mounted on my hat) and I hit the button to record and about one of out of 5 times or so, the camera doesn't start recording.
having said that, there should be a way to tie the camera activation to the opening of the car door like the key fob door unlocking/car starting so that when the officer leaves the car it turns on and then turns off a random period of time after re-entering the car.
Having them run all day and all the time creates its own issue, unless you want to record them using the bathroom (which anyone would consider an invasion of privacy) or something similar.

(170 posts)This would not be acceptable in any other occupation in which they wish to keep track of your activities. The cop should be fired or at least suspended without pay.
