Pelosi says House to vote on bigger stimulus payments after GOP blocks increase
Source: NBC News
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said Thursday that House Democrats would vote Monday on a standalone bill that would provide direct payments to Americans of $2,000 per person.
Her announcement came moments after House Republicans blocked a Democratic bid to increase the payments from the $600 per individual as passed in the stimulus bill earlier this week to the $2,000 amount.

(3,414 posts)We need to do three things, one at a time.
-Get stimulus money into INDIVIDUAL CITIZEN'S hands, plus loans for small businesses
Once that's passed, fund the continuing functions of government. AFTER debate about what we really need to be doing, sunlight on everything that isn't a paycheck to a federal employee or contractor! No
Once THAT is passed fund the military.
Not $10 million. For gender programs. In Pakistan.
Not $86 million for assistance to Cambodia; $130 million to Nepal, $135 million to Burma, $453 million to Ukraine, $700 million to Sudan.
a Women's History Museum and an American Latino Museum as part of the Smithsonian. It's not inherently bad that the Smithsonian gets $1 billion, but is that a hill to die on?
I blame whatever assholes attached THAT stuff to a bill we need to be approved in hours or days.

(62,227 posts)things Trump complained about were what his administration requested.
And they were part of the omnibus spending bill, not the COVID relief bill.

(5,158 posts)There are two completely separate bills that were voted on but with the same vote. It's like voting for President and Vice President. You vote for them both with one vote.
There is the Omnibus spending bill which is separate from the stimulus/relief bill. All the "stupid shit" is in the Omnibus bill which will keep the government funded and running. Trump asked for all that "stupid shit" and received most of what he wanted in the Omnibus bill, so his criticism is disingenuous.
The stimulus bill was relief for America and it's citizens.

(17,493 posts)I watched the Trump video for as long as I could stand and noticed the lying was especially blatant. But the lying drew the usual response from the Trump sycophants, who lauded his stunt as an act of the most magnanimous kind and proceeded to denounce the spending bill as wasteful.

"But, sir. What about 100 million+ struggling Americans?"
"Americans, Shmericans. Let'em learn how to vote!"

However, if all this makes Reeps look bad, that could
help us in Georgia -- hoping.

(6,241 posts)Or is it going to be full of irrelevant crap?
Most voters agree that getting money is a good thing, and cant wait to see their checks. Hardly anyone wants to make streaming pirated movies a federal felony, punishable by 5 years in prison. No one beyond the paid donors.
Let movie studios and their lawyers battle that. Not federal prosecutors and prisons. A Covid relief bill is no place for that fight.
Congress people on both sides: please just do what we sent you to Washington to do. Keep your egos in check, put your pet projects on the back burners and help us out.
