McConnell blocks Senate Democrats' initial attempt to approve $2,000 stimulus checks

Source: Washington Post

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) on Tuesday blocked consideration of a House bill that would deliver a $2,000 stimulus payments to most Americans — spurning a request made by President Trump even as more Senate Republicans voiced support for the dramatically larger checks.

McConnell’s move was just the beginning of a saga that is likely to engulf the Senate for the rest of the week. Democrats are pushing for an up-or-down vote on the House bill, while more Republicans acknowledge a need for larger stimulus checks. Those included calls from Georgia’s two embattled Republican senators — David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler — who find themselves in the midst of a tough re-election battle that will decide the fate of the chamber next week. GOP Sen. Deb Fischer of Nebraska also lent support Tuesday, declaring that “people are hurting and we need to get them more aid.”

McConnell instead took note of Trump’s Sunday statement that called for not only larger checks, but also new burbs of large tech companies and an investigations into the November election — and suggested they would be dealt with in tandem. “Those are the three important subjects the President has linked together,” he said. “This week the Senate will begin a process to bring these three priorities into focus.” The shifting Senate winds come a day after the House passed a bill to plus up stimulus checks with a bipartisan 275-134 vote. That proposal, called the CASH Act, aims to boost the $600 payments authorized in the massive year-end spending-and-relief package that Trump signed Sunday by another $1,400.

After McConnell spoke Tuesday, Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) then made a request to take up the House-passed bill. “There’s a major difference in saying you support $2,000 checks and fighting to put them into law,” he said. “The House bill is the only way the only way to deliver these stimulus checks before the end of session. Will Senate Republicans stand against the House of Representatives, the Democratic majority in the Senate, and the president of their own party to prevent these $2,000 checks from going out the door?” McConnell objected without further comment.

he thrives on watching people suffer the same as trump.

he will pass the money only because he wants to stay in power. I bet it works.

he was just re-elected this year.

It appears his stipulation is an attempt to play both sides against the middle by appearing to serve his master by adding on the poison pills like Section 230 and re-litigating the election fraud CT in addition to granting the $2000. Of course the House would never go along with it.

He'll help Democrats win GA by drawing this out... and doing so after the initial relief package was already purposely withheld so that people were dropped off of UE.

He's not "5 steps ahead" because if he was, the GOP would not have lost the Presidency by 8 million votes.

that McConnell is the one blocking badly needed money to get to the people. And he can be stripped of that power by booting both of the republicans. A vote for Perdue and Loeffler is a vote against your own family.

With a majority like that, he could be too dumb to count all 8 and it wouldn't matter.

They'll lose both Senate seats in GA, and McConnell will lose his position as the Senate majority leader. The $2000 will get to the American people with McConnell's help, or without it.

And now wants to tie the House bill with some additional legislation that repeals Section 230 (the liability protections for internet entities) and calls for "investigations into this past election".

Of course the 116th Congressional session ends on January 3rd and if he attempts to tack those 3 items together in one bill for passage, and if by some freaky reason, that did pass, then it would have to go back to the House again for consideration and a vote, and the House isn't about to pass any of that extra crap.

to tie all 3 items in that tweet, together in one bill. However if that happened, it would have to go back to the House again and they are not about to go for that other stuff. And at this point, even if they just pass the $2000, he would have to sign it before midnight January 3rd or the bill dies and they have to start all over with the new Congress.

This is why Turtle is trying to run out the clock.

Warnock and Ossoff need to start getting those ads out.

We are going to survive this, and we are NEVER going to forget who did this to us. Fuck you, McConnell, and your wife, too. FU a thousand times.

January 5th: We take the Senate back with our tie breaker, Kamala. Turtle Man is reduced to minority leader.

January 6th: Biden's votes are counted and WE WIN.

January 20th: Biden is sworn in as President. Kamala is sworn in as VP. We start to repair that which Trump and the GOP broke. The national nightmare is over.

Never again will anyone look at politics as something to just watch without participation.

Again, FU, McConnell. We will still think up things to do to you when you become minority leader. And, that investigation of the vote is stupid, and you know it. We see what you are doing.

There is enough money available to give every last one of us $5,000 or more. Well, hell, Mitch, you got yours, didn't ya? What a POS you are. Even your mother is ashamed of you.
