Darrell House was walking through the Petroglyph National Monument in Albuquerque on Sunday with his dog and his sister when he strayed off the marked trail. House, who identifies as Native American, says that hes often done so in the past to pray on land he considers his ancestral home.
This time, though, he was confronted by a National Park Service ranger. Moments later, House was lying on the ground in a fetal position, crying for help as the officer repeatedly used a Taser on him.
Stop! House pleads with the officer in a nearly five-minute video shot by his sister. I dont have anything sir
Im a peaceful person.
House later uploaded the video to Instagram and accused the officer of abusing his power and injuring him and his dog.
This could have been a civil interaction, House said in a post. The law doesnt work for the Indigenous.

A park ranger was seen on video using a stun gun on a Native American man who was walking his dog with his sister at a national monument in New Mexico on Sunday.
The man, Darrell House, who is Oneida and Navajo, said he went for a stroll with his sister and his dog Sunday afternoon at Petroglyph National Monument in Albuquerque, where, he said, he often prays and meditates in honor of the land and his ancestors.

House said he stepped off the trail to maintain social distancing from an approaching group of hikers when a park ranger ran behind him and warned him to stay on the path.
The National Park Service released on Tuesday a 10-minute long recording from the officers body camera. It appeared to show the park ranger, who has not yet been publicly identified, asking House for his identification multiple times. House initially refused to provide ID before giving a false identity and date of birth, the video shows.

(16,067 posts)I think he should be staked to the ground next to a fire ant hill and then have honey poured over his face...and even that's better then what he deserves!!!

(26,044 posts)The optics are especially bad because the victim was Native American, but some parks (including Mount Rainier) strictly forbid people going off-trail in designated areas, because it damages the ecology of those areas.
Not saying theres any excuse in this case, but lets just say if there were a tasing incident involving one of the many non-NA photographers who walk straight into environmental recovery area - stay off sections of Reflection Lakes because I can get a cooler composition there, Id applaud the officer doing the tasing.

(20,568 posts)They pulled over all traffic before crossing a bridge. They demanded ID from everyone. Senator Patty Murray requested an meeting with the local head of Border Patrol and they told her they would not meet with her because their mission was secret. It was just a couple days when they whole "secret" mission was stopped. The only people they took into custody and held in the ICE jail were actual American citizens.
Border Patrol - Park Service - and others - I am sick of their vigilante behavior. That Park Service guy kept tasering the man and he could have killed him. He stepped off the trail to maintain social distancing from a large crowd of people.

(28,442 posts)Not even close. This ranger was a douchebag but I have never, ever, heard of any other park ranger demanding ID for someone stepping off the path. Or for any reason.

(20,568 posts)As I see it, some in enforcement positions are taking it to the extremes and playing tough with disastrous consequences. Both BP folks and this NPS guy exceeded their authority. Neither should have asked for ID.

I love Cross Country Skiing. Actually a passion. I love to ski the Blue Ridge Parkway here in WNC, live 1/2 mile away. It closes in winter and skiing the snow with paved Road base beneath is great. I have been 8 miles uphill in 18 inches of snow, not a soul within miles and a female Ranger has drawn a gun on me, sitting up top before decent, because my dog was off lease while prepping for down hill run. Made me pour out a flask with about 3 cups of wine, actually an organic Cali Pinot Noir, a bit pricy.
While at the overlook in summer, I seen Florida tourist lay out picnics on the tables with multiple bottles open in plain view. Go figure. Ranger rides by and waves,
