California has nation's 2nd confirmed case of virus variant

Source: AP

By COLLEEN SLEVIN and CARLA K. JOHNSON

California on Wednesday announced the nation’s second confirmed case of the new and apparently more contagious variant of the coronavirus, offering a strong indication that the infection is spreading more widely in the United States.

Gov. Gavin Newsom announced the infection found in Southern California during an online conversation with Dr. Anthony Fauci, head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

“I don’t think Californians should think that this is odd. It’s to be expected,” Fauci said.

Newsom did not provide any details about the person who was infected.

Newsom has announced the first known case of the new and apparently more contagious variant of the coronavirus in the nation's most populated state. It follows the first reported U.S. case in Colorado. Newsom said he had just learned of the finding in a Southern California case Wednesday. He announced it during the online conversation with Fauci, the nation's leading infectious-disease expert. (Office of the Governor via AP)

Not that I believe the victims should be punished, but they need to be in ultra-ultra-quarantine. For the safety of everyone. We don't have enough vaccine to go around as it is.

It has spread and likely partially to blame for the super high numbers in CA.

I believe there are two new mutations now. I would like verification of this.

The new UK variant, christened B117, was discovered during an investigation into why coronavirus cases in Kent continued to rise during the November lockdown. Scientists say they have high confidence that B117 has a transmission advantage – and a modelling study by London School of Hygiene and Tropical medicine researchers has estimated it is about 56% more transmissible than previous variants.

It's certainly seems to doing a number on the U.K.

https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/world/coronavirus-maps.html
58.6 daily new cases per 100,000, 7 day moving average (up from 55.1 yesterday), now ahead of the U.S. 55.2
The world map near the top of the page is well worth a look: U.K. and the U.S. and Sweden are among a very few burgundy colored ones. Netherlands too at 56 per 100k daily new cases.

San Diego County News
San Diego Man Tests Positive for UK Variant of COVID-19

A San Diego man with no travel outside the county has tested positive for the COVID-19 variant first identified in the United Kingdom, the County Health and Human Services Agency announced today.

The man was tested on Dec. 29 after two days of symptoms, and results showed a characteristic pattern that indicated it could be the new UK strain. The specimen was immediately sent to Scripps Research and whole genome sequencing determined Dec. 30 that it is the UK variant, also known as B.1.1.7.

The patient is not hospitalized and is currently isolated. The County’s case investigation has identified household contacts who are being quarantined and tested for the novel coronavirus. The man had little interaction with people outside his household while potentially contagious.
