Wisconsin hospital says employee intentionally discarded coronavirus vaccine vials

The Wisconsin medical center where 57 vials of the Moderna coronavirus vaccine were discarded earlier this week said in a statement Wednesday that the employee who removed the vaccines from the freezer did so intentionally and was no longer employed by the hospital.
On Monday, hospital officials said that around 50 vials of the vaccine had to be thrown away after an employee at Advocate Aurora Health medical center in Grafton, Wis., inadvertently removed them from the pharmacy refrigerator, where the vaccines are required to be housed at low temperatures.
At the time, the incident was attributed to human error, but in a statement Wednesday, the medical center said the vials had been removed intentionally. According to the statement, the 57 vials that had been discarded overnight had led to 500 doses of the vaccine being thrown out.
We immediately launched an internal review and were led to believe this was caused by inadvertent human error. The individual in question today acknowledged that they intentionally removed the vaccine from refrigeration, the hospital said in the statement Wednesday.

The world would be a better place if more people refuse the vaccine, especially those people who are ahead of me in the vaccine line.

Careless on my part but the spoiled item was not valuable.
I feel bad for this employee-=yes, it was careless but still the same, it was a mistake.
Dozens of vials of coronavirus vaccine thrown out due to 'human error' at Wisconsin clinic

Fifty vials of the Moderna coronavirus vaccine had to be thrown out in Wisconsin this past weekend due to human error.
TMJ4 Milwaukee, a local NBC-affiliate station, reported that the incident occurred at an Advocate Aurora Health medical center in Grafton, Wis., when an employee took the vials out of a storage freezer to remove another item. The employee then mistakenly failed to return the vials to the freezer.
"We learned that about 50 vials of Moderna vaccine were inadvertently removed from a pharmacy refrigerator overnight," an Advocate Aurora spokesperson told TMJ4. "While some of the vaccine was administered to team members on Dec. 26 within the approved 12-hour post-refrigeration window, unfortunately, most of it had to be discarded due to the temperature storage requirements necessary to maintain its viability."
The spokesperson added, "We are clearly disappointed and regret this happened........................

(24,560 posts)We don't know what this employee did...nurse, stocker, housekeeper, medical assistant??? How long had they worked there.
Why did they intentionally discard the vials...
When nurses make mistakes, they sometimes do something intentional to "cover the mistake"..Did this person throw the vials away to cover the mistakes...(but usually it would be one vial..Every nurse works with narcotics that are counted each shift) Vials get contaminated easily and yeah, you gotta throw the rest of the vial away..but this sounds like they threw a case away.
Was this employee a stocker and was drinking on the job..was this person an anti-vaxxer? Was this person evil? Not enough information..

(4,416 posts)You all are reading much more into this than is there.
The lower article says the person took the vaccine vials out to get to something else, and then forgot to put them back in.
I have a 24-year old son still living at home that does that all the time. Takes the milk out and leaves it on the counter, and walks away.
Instead of demanding prison time, how about a little compassion? He lost his job over it, but to me it sounds more like negligence than criminal behavior. Yes, he intentionally took it out. It doesnt say he intentionally refused to put it back.
There are likely thousands of vials sitting in thousands of cold-storage freezers right now. This is a big mistake, but I dont think somebody should be in prison for it.

(3,171 posts)There's nothing in there indicating that the former employee is a Trump supporter. If she's anti-vax, there's an equal possibility that she's on the left of the political spectrum. Asserting one way or the other is jumping to conclusions.

(44,962 posts)Employee did it intentionally. I presume police investigation will figure out the motive.
you are the one who can't figure it out. While employee first claimed his/her actions were simply a human error, eventually employee admitted he/she did it intentionally. The administration first send out a statement that this was a human error, but soon send another statement that this was not a human error but instead was intentionally done.
Maybe if it were just a few vials...I could believe the "I forgot" story...but it was 57 vials...how do you forget 57 vials of a vaccine that requires refrigeration?
He lost his job because he was incompetent, and until there is a thorough investigation we don't know whether he forgot or intentionally left the vaccine out!
Regardless, whether or not it was intentional he should have to pay for those 57 vials!

For some reason, that employee did not want their fellow workers vaccinated. It could be anti-vaxxers, it could be more lizard people believers, it could be GOP party official business for all we know (or all three- they get mixed up sometimes for me). The local police and FBI a and FDA re now involved. Cue the orange jesus offering bail/lawyers for that former employee/assaulter with intent to kill.
