Pet food recalled after at least 28 dogs die, 8 sickened: FDA

Source: Yahoo

By MEREDITH DELISO

Several pet food products have been recalled after 28 dogs died, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced Wednesday.

Three brands of Sportmix products for dogs and cats made by Midwestern Pet Foods may contain potentially fatal levels of the toxin aflatoxin, according to the FDA.

The FDA said it is aware of at least 28 deaths and eight illnesses in dogs that ate the recalled pet food.

The Missouri Department of Agriculture tested multiple samples of the food and found "very high levels" of aflatoxin, which is produced by a mold that can grow on corn and other grains used in pet food, the FDA said.

A company that makes a product that someone (human or animal) ingests should be testing every batch. The sad thing is that the consequences are never really serious enough.

Found out when cats started going blind or dropping dead from heart failure. Cats must have meat.

Peanut butter is often high in aflatoxins- so I usually get cashew butter. I ‘m not a vegetarian, but I take taurine - good for blood pressure and central nervous system.

I just mix it into yogurt or cottage cheese. You can just sprinkle some on his food. My allergy dr first recommended taurine to me.

It's called. Horrible teeth, horrible gums, infections that work their way up to the nose....I spent a fortune on dental work, needless to say! They don't go after their canned food (Tractor Supply, lg. 4health) like they did their dry food, but that's too bad, you spoiled things! I always have the never-fail nutritional yeast flakes to get them interested. If they could live on those flakes, my life would sure be easier!

Wet food is too rich for him -- he gets sick on it. I feed him Science Diet dry food for indoor cats ages 11+ years. Seems to do well on it. I inherited the cat when my roommate passed away 2 years ago. My first cat and I just kept using what I saw him being fed.

Time for some board members to be tried and convicted of negligence in pursuit of profit above the safety of the consumers they SERVICE!!! Let's end this bullshit once and for all, right here...you want corporations to be considered people? Fine. Then these 'people', using moldy corn to create cat food for the pets of their customers should be held to account for this being allow (or more to the point PROMOTED) to increase their fucking profits...

These animals are less human than the pets who suffer because of them.

He hates canned food and not crazy for kibble. Their favorite is baked chicken thighs with rice. I will bake enough to feed my two half husky dogs for 3 days. I put this over a half cup of kibble. Many people online do not trust dog foods so they keep rotating brands to be safer.

Studies are still on going. Grain free foods replace the grains with legumes and dried pea meal. Those are suspected to inhibit absorption of Taurine causing heart diseases. There is nothing wrong with dogs and grains.

Usually boiled chicken, brown rice, and veges. 60-70% meat ratio, with a vitamin. Its actually more cost effective than decent dry dog food anyway, even for giant sized pupsters like ours. They get eggs (usually from our chickens), oatmeal with some cheese for breakfast.

They are happy and healthy, except for the usual aches/pains of older dogs.
