(CNN)The US surpassed 20 million total recorded Covid-19 cases on Friday, hours after the country ushered in 2021 and left behind its deadliest month of the pandemic.
The nation also has set a Covid-19 hospitalization record for four straight days. The high counts are a grim reminder that even with 2020 behind us, the pandemic continues to ravage parts of the country. And some leaders warn the worst is still ahead.
"We are still going to have our toughest and darkest days," Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti told CNN on Thursday.
More than 125,370 coronavirus patients were in US hospitals Thursday, the fourth consecutive day that number set a record for the pandemic, COVID Tracking Project data shows.

If Fox or some other right wing news outlet manages to snap a picture of a Democrat without a mask, then that Democrat is hounded and the subject of potential recalls. But, when Republicans openly hold mass gatherings and encourage members of the public to disregard CDC guidelines, it generates support by their base. We need to stop falling for these project veritas type attacks and start holding Republicans accountable for encouraging people to ignore CDC guidelines.
Despite top health experts warning Americans against holding indoor in-person gatherings during the holidays, President Donald Trump has continued to brush those concerns aside, defending holding White House parties this month amid daily record numbers of COVID-19 cases and deaths.
At a Tuesday event touting his vaccine effort, a reporter asked,"Why are you modeling a different behavior to the American people than what your scientists tell?"
"Theyre Christmas parties, and, frankly, weve reduced the number very substantially, as you know," Trump responded. "I see a lot of people at the parties wearing masks, and I would say that I look out at the audience at those parties, and we have a lot of people wearing masks, and I think thats a good thing.
Yet videos and photos posted on social media paint a starkly different picture. They show many of those attending the gatherings not wearing masks or social distancing.

Thank goodness people were more sensible last night, lots of fireworks, a little gunfire, and no sirens. That means they stayed home.
