Dozens of Hong Kong pro-democracy figures arrested in sweeping crackdown

Source: The Guardian

More than 50 people, including pro-democracy politicians and campaigners, have been arrested in early-morning raids across Hong Kong in an unprecedented crackdown by authorities that was condemned as a “despicable” assault on freedom.

In a police operation involving more than 1,000 officers, the 53 individuals were detained under the national security law (NSL), accused of “subverting state power” by holding primaries for pro-democracy candidates for the Hong Kong election. The election was ultimately delayed by Lam for a year, purportedly because of the pandemic.

The raids on Wednesday sent shockwaves around the once semi-autonomous city, as social media posts and news reports confirmed arrest after arrest. By mid-morning, lists of more than 50 individuals emerged, reportedly including every candidate to have run in the unofficial primaries last year, as well as organisers and pollsters, and the first known foreigner – an American lawyer – to be arrested under the law.
...
Some of the targets livestreamed their own arrests, with at least one video capturing police confirming the accusations against them: participating in primary polling for the pro-democracy camp, with the ultimate aim of winning a majority in the legislative council. Under the new laws this was subversion, authorities said. The NSL defines subversion to include organising or planning to seriously interfere, disrupt or undermine “the performance of duties and functions” by the central or Hong Kong governments, and carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment for “principal offenders”.

So trying to win an election is now illegal in Hong Kong. And they'll arrest Americans too. They know Trump is just lost in his tantrums about losing his election.

They assured the citizens there they wouldn't change the way Hong Kong was governed. I think we all knew Hong Kong would lose what they were used to. How horrible to have freedom, then lose it.

It's not to be gambled with, or thrown away.

Domestic fascists are under the mistaken impression that they won't come to feel the boot of their pet tyranny upon their necks.

our State Department would have come down on the perps and demand free and fair elections. That would have been before republicans tore down the State Department and made it a lobbyist's playground. Does anyone remember when the United States stood for freedom and the rule of law? I sure do. Then came the Tea Party, neo-nazis, white supremacists, fascists and Trumpistas, all loved and welcomed into the bosom of the republican party. Any party who chose Donald Trump as their standard bearer doesn't deserve to win another election. Ever.

China and Russia are both now fascist dictatorships.
I wish the MSM would educate themselves about definitions of political systems. They have no clue on what is Communism, or Socialism or Fascism.
