DC updates: 4 dead, 52 arrested, 14 police officers injured after pro-Trump rioters breach US Capitol; FBI opens investigation
Updated 1:00 am E.T. Jan. 7, 2021

WASHINGTON — The nation's lawmakers took to their electoral duties late Wednesday amid broken glass and smashed doors in the U.S. Capitol following an historic day of havoc wrought by pro-Trump rioters who breached the building in hopes of thwarting President-elect Joe Biden's victory.

Thousands of rioters had gathered at the National Mall to protest the election results. At a campaign-style rally about an hour before the mob broke through police lines at the Capitol, Trump had urged them to go to the building.

D.C. Police Chief Robert Contee said the chaotic day included four fatalities: a woman who was shot by the U.S. Capitol Police, as well as three others — two men and one woman — who died in “separate medical emergencies.” Police had made "in excess of 52 arrests," including 26 on U.S. Capitol grounds, he said.

At least 14 Metropolitan Police Department Officers were injured during the demonstrations, Contee said. Two pipe bombs — one from the DNC and one from the RNC — were also recovered by police, he said.

You forgive this type of behavior then you're asking for more of it.

While I'd love to see some of the more violent folks serve some time, I'd be happy if the bulk of these idiots were forced to do a couple hundred hours of community service in DC. Since most of them are out of town, I say they should be forced to stay overnight in Trump hotels. I'm sure he'd waive the $300/night charge and provide them with free dinner and breakfast. After all, they were just doing what he told them to do.

I also want the House to impeach him immediately and send it to the Senate for trial. Let them go on record for his attempt to bribe election officials to change votes and to incite violence and urge rioters to ransack the Capitol. Had lawmakers and staff not been rushed out, how many of them might have been attacked by that mob?

This is disgraceful and I hope the media hangs this around Republican necks.

Thu Jan 7, 2021, 08:18 AM

Why didn't they have enough police on station to control the crowds to begin with???

I watched this and have been at any number of marches in DC in the past. You were never able to climb the Capitol steps like they did with NO police line and relatively few Capitol Police present. The officials responsible had more than enough warning of the intentions of some of those coming to DC to protest. The level of preparation and the lack of police presence suggest that someone may have called them down so as not to be too threatening to the Trumpian Horde.

There is no excuse for this breach and the mayhem which followed. We will likely see more of it from the same fools and dangerous actors.

Trump has been turning up the flames for months. He told them to take the Capitol and Congress and they came prepared to do that. This outcome was entirely predictable and yet no-one saw fit to gag or arrest the agent-provocateur in chief let alone provide in-depth crowd control??? This is straight out of Putin's Ukraine destabilization playbook almost note for note. Anyone who paid attention to how that went down could not avoid recognizing this.

I'm not kidding or using some tired metaphor here. The FBI and DHS should have been on alert long ago, but someone told them ignore the Russians and worry about the "Chinese threat."

We've had 500,000 and more during Civil Rights and Vietnam protests, and since, and no-one at the Pentagon, Capitol, or White House was put personally under threat, though there were certainly a few who have deserved it.

minimum to allow the insurrection to play out. As Colin Powell questioned earlier on Morning Joe, the goons were hanging on the capitol steps & grounds and they did not have enough manpower to clear them. The National Guards & other authorities were not called up till later & it took time for them to mobilize, delaying the clearing of the grounds later into the evening.

The first thing the leaders need to do is remove the Con, expel the sedition caucus from congress then prosecute every insurrectionist goon that came to the capitol. Lots of media footage to comb through but they need to be held accountable or it will occur again.
