Justice Department warns of national security fallout from Capitol Hill insurrection
Source: Politico
The mob that rampaged inside the halls of Congress on Wednesday might have taken a lot more than Americans illusions of invulnerability. National security equities may have been among the records stolen from the Capitol on Wednesday when pro-Trump insurgents stormed the building and looted several congressional offices, the Justice Department said in a briefing Thursday.
Michael Sherwin, the acting U.S. attorney for Washington, D.C., said it will likely take several days to flesh out exactly what happened, what was stolen, what wasn't, noting that items, electronic items were stolen from senators offices, documents and materials were stolen, and we have to identify what was done to mitigate that [damage].
Lawmakers and congressional staffers are demanding answers about how a federal complex in the nations capital with its own police force was overrun in broad daylight, leading to four deaths and dozens of injuries.
But its not only the physical security of members, staff and other employees that was endangered by the breachcongressional offices were ransacked, and at least one laptop, belonging to Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), was stolen, Merkley said. Rioters were photographed sitting at House Speaker Nancy Pelosis desk and removing a piece of her mail from the building. And the Senate Parliamentarians office was raided, leaving piles of documents scattered across the floor and into the hallway.

(2,768 posts)Rep. Swalwell says he didn't even know where the Parliamentarian's Office was, so it sounds like they had maps and a plan. At least one carried zip ties as restraints. A number had military training and weapons.
Thank God they weren't successful in getting the states' certificates or capturing any member of Congress.
An inside source of help is suspected since they knew right where to go.

(13,582 posts)Trump planned a DC shit show. He cultivated a seditionist army. He hand picked loyal followers to fill roles in security forces. Then he and his willing co-conspirators, family and Republican elected officials kicked the whole thing off - sat back - and watched these traitors do their best to overthrow the government of the United States. In short, he told us what he was going to do and in the end it looked like what it was - an attempt to destroy our Democracy.

(129,950 posts)I think there was someone else behind the planning of it and 45 was nothing more than the "figurehead" and "Minister of Propaganda" for it. He is not and never has been a "government" person and it's been obvious the past 4 years, the breathtaking ignorance of "government" that has oozed from his direction.
It had to be someone who is intimately knowledgeable about government, particularly Congress, and that might be Stephen Miller. He apparently started out his career working for batshit crazy Bachmann and eventually worked for Keebler Elf Sessions (which would mean knowledge of both sides of the Capitol) before heading into the WH power structure. So he would definitely know the ins and outs of the Capitol building.

(129,950 posts)but Miller is actively employed in the middle of it and probably executed the plot.
But I wouldn't put it past Gingrich, since he has been the godfather of chaos (even before Bannon), actively working to "blow up the process". And now has suddenly started freaking out, misspelling words in tweet and sputtering -

Nancy Pelosi has warned you without a Republican Senate to serve as a check on her chamber, the 117th Congress is prepared to follow the fiscal blowout of 2020 with another historic surge in federal spending and debt. @FreemanWSJ

As a former Speaker of the House I was infuriated by the assault on the Capitol. Everyone who illegally entered the Captiol should be tried. Everyone who confronted the police should be tried on felony charges. We must insist on the rule of law in the Capitol and everywhere.

The Republican National Committee should adopt a rule that no one who belongs to pro-violence extremist groups should be allowed to serve as a Republicasn delegate or be eligible to run for office as a Republican.Democrats should adopt the same rule.
